Gibraltar Open 2015
World No.75 Kristian Frost Olesen came up with a commanding display to
see off Spain’s Alejandro Garbi Caro in straight games and lift the
Gibraltar Open, PSA Challenger 5 title – the 13th of his career.
The Dane, who came into the event having won three of his last five PSA
World Tour events, swept past Jan Koukal in the semi-final while Caro
upset top seed Piedro Schweertman to secure his final berth.
Olesen was the dominant force for much of the match and he raced into an
early lead in the opening two games to power ahead to a 2-0 advantage.
With Caro on the ropes, Olesen made the most of his superior fitness to
rise to victory in the third game and capture an 11-6, 11-4, 11-4
triumph.
“I feel really, really happy,” said an exuberant Olesen.
“The tournament was really well run and the organisation was really,
really good. I felt really welcome here. My performance was also really
good and I am happy to win.
“I think I played really well. It was a tough game and to have two
matches in one day was really difficult so I had to dig deep to win in
the final. I felt I played well.
“Alejandro was probably labouring slightly towards the end but I was
feeling good.”
Result – Final:
[2] Kristian Frost Olesen (DEN) bt [4] Alejandro Garbi Caro (ESP) 3-0:
11-6, 11-4, 11-4 (44 mins)
