Willstrop Clebrates In Cleethorpes Report
Courtesy of Mike Hallam,
With the introduction
of 5 new faces, the large crowds at Cleethorpes were in for a treat,
the 4 young players acquitted themselves well. Although Chris
Simpson beat Angus Gillams 3-0 it was much tighter than the score
line suggests. 3-1 wins for Willstrop and Selby testify to how well
Earles and Hinds played, with the latter having a great chance to
win the second game. New face number 5, Tom Richards won 3-2 in an
excellent game with Declan James with what looked like a possible
upset on the cards.
The first semi final was very close, Simpson taking the first 2,
11/9, 11/7 with Selby coming back in the third 11/5. A close fourth
game saw Simpson winning a tight game 11/9, with a nick at the back
of the court, after an hour and 20 minutes. Whether it was Richards
5 setter the night before but he was slow starting and Willstrop was
soon 1 game up, with several delightful winners. Richards started
better in the second but found Willstrop's racket to often playing
cross courts and was down 2-0. The third was quickly over 11/3, much
the same as the second. I am sure Tom will bounce back, as it was
just one of those days but all respect to James as he played some
lovely winners.
Back on court after just 6 hours rest, was the long semi going to
tell on Simpson. He started well but Willstrop took a 6-4 lead,
Simpson came back with a couple of mistakes from Willstrop along
with some excellent squash from Simpson, 1-0 to Simpson. The second
was close with Willstrop moving Simpson around the court, close game
but 1-1. Willstrop started quicker of the two and with some lovely
racket skill lead 6-0, a fight back by Simpson but Willstop saw the
game out 2-1. A close start in the fourth but Willstrop again using
his varied racket skills ran out the winner 3-1.
The crowds at Cleethorpes had witnessed some excellent squash and
where to applaud the players in all matches for their skills and
athleticism. Many thanks to John Massarella and Eddie Dougherty for
officiating over the weekend and Rick Havercroft for comparing along
with Brian Barrett for the music and lighting. It was again a
pleasure to have Malcolm Willstrop attending and the encouragement
he gives me. A last thank you to all the sponsors and those
attending.
