PSA & WSA NEWS
PSA’s Chief Executive Alex Gough, in an interview with BBC sport has
confirmed that the men’s (PSA) and women’s (WSA) professional squash
players associations are to merger. Expectations are the merger
could be completed by 1 January.
"As a small sport looking to grow, it was an obvious choice for us
to do," Alex Gough told the BBC.
"Conversations between the two tours started a few years ago when we
were working towards the bid to make squash an Olympic sport for
2020," Gough said.
"For the Olympic bid the men and women's tours need to be presented
side by side, with a much more joined-up approach, and that then
leads to equality, prize money and equal opportunities.
The BBC state that the merger, voted for by both male and female
players, would see the WSA disbanded.
Their report follows a theme of equal prize money pointing out the
disparity in World Champion prize money received by the men’s and
women’s world champions.
In a separate BBC interview with Radio 5 Laura Massaro says, "A
merger can help us accelerate the work we do."
"In the future we're looking to work together, deliver a better
package to sponsors and the media.
"Hopefully we'll be able to go forward with something that's a
little bit better, and work together with these sponsors to get
equality."
