Rolex Annual Awards to be announced
Wednesday
It has been another rollercoaster year for professional squash. 2021
started tentatively with hotel quarantines, player ‘bubbles’, no
spectators and sensational rallies greeted with eerie silence.
Gradually, the old tournament hustle and bustle returned and some of our
sport’s most famous venues (the Pyramids, San Francisco, Canary Wharf)
were joined by some notable new ones (the Arlen Specter Center).
On court, Egypt continued to rule, although there were notable dents in
their armour from New Zealand, USA and Peru. We saw the great Gregory
Gaultier bow out and the sport mourned the loss of the great Malcolm
Willstrop. At grassroots level, most of us were finally allowed back on
court, but while the virus continues to linger the future at all levels
of the game remains unpredictable.
Our Annual Awards are once again sponsored by ROLEX at Michael Spiers,
an organisation steeped in squash patronage, and we welcome back our
expert panel of judges from around the world. The Player of the Year
will be announced on Wednesday.
