El Welily wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month
award

no.2 Raneem El Welily won Squash Player’s Women’s Player of the Month
award after claiming her second China Open title and helping Egypt
retain the WSF World Women’s Team Championship in September.
The 29-year-old was made to battle for her Shanghai success, needing
five games to defeat joint ninth seed Nicol David in the quarter-finals
and four to beat third seed Nour El Tayeb in the semi-finals and fifth
seed Camille Serme in the final.
"I’m just happy to start the season with a win,” said the second seed.
“The final is never easy. I don’t think I played my best squash, but
mentally I was maybe better than in other matches.
“I’ve won this tournament here before and done so badly afterwards in a
previous season, so I’m just happy with the win for now. I’m not
thinking about anything else.
“The plan this season is to take it one match at a time, one point at a
time and one rally at a time. Hopefully I can play this well again this
season. I’ve got to play harder to improve and work on new stuff.”
El Welily carried out her plan the very next week, winning all five of
her matches at the World Championship in Dalian, including a 3/1 victory
over England’s Laura Massaro in the final. |
