SEPTEMBER - WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE MONTH
King wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month
award
New
Zealander Joelle King has been nominated as Squash Player’s Women’s
Player of the Month for September after an outstanding August.
Not only did the 28-year-old win two gold medals in the World
Doubles Championships in Manchester, she then went on to knock out
defending champion Laura Massaro in the first round of the China
Open.
Of her triumphs with Amanda Landers-Murphy in the women’s doubles
and Paul Coll in the mixed, she said: “What a week. So proud of my
team. What great memories on and off the court.”
The former world no.4 followed those successes up by defeating third
seed Massaro 11-0, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4 in Shanghai.
King said afterwards: “I felt good out there. Laura is no mug, so to
come out and win in four is really positive. I was seeing the ball
early from the first rally.
“I was just in front of her throughout that first game and to take
it 11-0 was beyond expectation. It can be easy to drop concentration
after that kind of score though, so I tried to stay calm and not get
too excited.
“I put in a lot of work in the summer and if I can keep playing my
game and produce more of the same, then who knows what will happen.”
