Willstrop wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month
award
England’s
James Willstrop has been revealed as Squash Player Magazine’s Player
of the Month for July.
The Yorkshireman’s performance at the Dubai World Series Finals
confirmed his return as a genuine contender for major titles on the
PSA Tour after several years of frustration caused by
career-threatening injury and lingering illness.
Victories over defending champion Gregory Gaultier and talented
Egyptian Ali Farag at Dubai Opera saw the 33-year-old qualify from
the group stage.
A stunning 14-12 11-6 win over world champion Karim El Gawad
followed in the semi-finals, before defeat to Mohammed Elshorbagy in
a tight three game final, in front of an enthralled crowd at Dubai
Opera.
“It’s a great feeling to be able to keep pushing yourself,”
Willstrop reflected. “I don’t think I’ve played as well as this over
four or five days for a long time.
“I’m sure these players are raising it all the time, the standard is
getting better, so for me to be able to respond again to that means
that it can’t be far off from the best squash I’ve played.”
Willstrop’s final appearance was his third in PSA events this
season. His world ranking is now six, his highest position for two
and a half years.
