Gaultier wins Squash Player’s
Player of the Month award
Gregory
Gaultier is Squash Player’s Male Player of the Month for April after
winning his third British Open title for the loss of just one game
in March to become the oldest world no.1 since the PSA rankings
began.
The 34-year-old Frenchman, who also lifted squash’s oldest title in
2007 and 2014, recovered from a game down to beat 36-year-old
Englishman Nick Matthew 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 in the final.
"It was a massive day for me," said Gaultier afterwards. "I only
found out a few days ago that there were three of us who could get
to number one.
“I wasn't thinking about that during the week; I was focusing on
playing well and executing my tactics.
"I had a great week and a great feeling on court. I was moving well
and to be number one as well again at my age is an amazing feeling -
it's pure pleasure."
With his semi-final opponent, Ramy Ashour, retiring after one game,
Gaultier was kept on court for only 116 minutes prior to the
67-minute final.
