World Class Qualifying
in Sheffield
Tonight's qualifying finals at the
Hallamshire and Abbeydale clubs tonight featured the world numbers
20, 21, 22, 25, 28, 29, 32 and 54 - quite a field.

Crowds In Sheffield
Sheffield's Nick Matthew raised hopes of local
interest in the first round at the Crucible Theatre on Wednesday, when he
overcame former British Open champion David Evans in the first qualifying
round.
Taking full advantage of playing at his own club Hallamshire, world No25
Matthew beat the former world No3 from Wales 15-9 15-11 11-15 15-4 in
exactly one hour.
Chances of an all-Yorkshire final qualifying match were dashed when James
Willstrop, the world junior champion from Pontefract, was overcome by
Sussex's Peter Genever in an 83-minute marathon. Genever won 15-14 8-15 15-9
15-9 and now faces Matthew for a place in the main draw.
