Wimbledon Racquets
and Fitness Club
Rebecca Colthup describes her
club ...
Our club is on the outskirts of London with a
postcode made famous by the Lawn Tennis Club just a mile up the road.
Wimbledon is a members club. The great thing here is that most of
the members of staff have been members of the club before they became
involved in the day to day running of the club. This means that they are
passionate about this club and they will go that extra mile to try and
make the club a success. We pride ourselves on trying to create a very
friendly and relaxed atmosphere for all our members to enjoy.
The
club boasts over 1800 members, 450 of whom are under the age of 19.
The future of the club is definitely looking bright.
We have six squash courts, seven badminton courts, a gym,
sauna and the most important part a lively bar which is a
great venue for our many social events.
The club was built in 1937 on the site of an old warehouse. We
started with four squash and four badminton courts. Two squash courts were
added some years later. More recently we have added three badminton courts
(late 80s) In the mid 90s we built an extension incorporating a new gym,
shop and reception area. The club has not always thrived, with the threat
of closure looming on several occasions. The members helped to save the
club with their continued loyalty through those troubled times.
The
club is one of the strongest in the Surrey Leagues with fierce
internal competition for places especially in the men’s teams. One of our
top players is Bradley Ball, world number 51. We currently field 6
men’s, 3 ladies, 5 junior, 2 vets and a vintage team in the various County
leagues. Both our Men’s 1st & 2nd and ladies 1st & 2nd teams are in the
top division of their respective County leagues showing the club's current
strength in depth.
Wimbledon plays host to many tournaments throughout the year. The main
professional event we hold is the
Youngs Wimbledon Cup.
This year's women’s final was the longest match ever seen here at
Wimbledon. It was a titanic battle between Rebecca Macree and Jenny
Tranfield lasting 99 minutes. Rebecca Macree was the eventual victor. The
men’s event was won by the ‘mean looking’ Stephen Meads.
We
also hold both junior and senior graded events. In the senior
tournament held just four weeks ago we had a phenomenal 111 entries – now
that took some organising especially when the guys in the B grade insist
on the matches going to 5 and lasting 90 minutes, it does nothing for my
carefully planned schedule!! Hopefully we will also receive a large entry
for the junior event being held in October.
Our
new head coach Philip Rushworth has been with us now for three
months and he has made an amazing impact. He is a young and talented
coach. He has brought to the club fresh new ideas and an enthusiasm for
the game that is spreading throughout the club.
"It's a good opportunity for me,"
Phil told Framboise, another
famous Wimbledon member shortly before taking up his new post. "It’s a
big name club, and working there will give me the opportunity to get known
in the south of England. I've just finished my Health and Sports studies
at University."
Hopefully with the team of coaches and staff that we have here at
Wimbledon the club will continue to thrive.
You never know, the next James Willstrop or Lee Beachill may be
here at Wimbledon!!!!

Rodney Durbach, South Africa's world number 28 and winner of
six PSA events, has played for Wimbledon for three seasons.
"I enjoy playing here because there is always a great atmosphere.
"As we have quite a few South African members it makes for a great
feel at the club.
And the best bit is that they serve Castle Lager!!!!!"

Jason Barry is another South African International who plays
and coaches at
Wimbledon.
"I enjoy playing here because of all the beautiful women at the
club!!
"On a more serious note, of all the clubs I work at in London,
Wimbledon is by far the friendliest family orientated club with
members of all ages and people from all walks of life which all
contributes to a good atmosphere."
