Powerplaysports British Junior Open 2006
02-06 Jan, Sheffield

Day 5
Egypt Celebrate Six British Junior Open Titles In Sheffield

Whilst there was English disappointment in the Powerplaysports British Junior Open Squash Championships in Sheffield today (Friday) when surprise finalist Joe Lee was unable to clinch success in the Men's U17 event, there was jubilation in the Egyptian camp when world junior champion Ramy Ashour stormed to victory in the closing Men's U19 final to give Egypt six of the eight titles available in the sport's most prestigious junior championships.

English hopes of British Junior Open success for the first time in four years were dashed by Egyptian Mohamed Ali Anwar Reda.  The second seed in the Men's U17 event beat Surrey's 5/8 seed Joe Lee – the British U17 champion and lowest-seeded player in any of the finals – 9-5 9-4 9-3 in 41 minutes.  The win marked Reda's second British Junior Open title after winning the U13 trophy in 2002.

Ramy Ashour was in sensational form as he brushed aside Pakistan's No2 seed Aamir Atlas Khan 9-0 9-6 9-0 in the 29-minute men's U19 final to boost his chances of a second world junior title in the 2006 championships in New Zealand in July.  It was the 18-year-old from Cairo's fourth British Open title since 1999.

Perhaps the biggest shock of the day came in the women's U19 final in which Egypt's Raneem Weleily – the highest world-ranked player in the whole competition – was bidding to extend her unbeaten record in the event throughout this millennium after collecting successive U13, U15 and U17 titles (both twice) since last losing in the U13 final in December 1999!

The 17-year-old U19 favourite, ranked 36 in the WISPA world list, faced a determined second-seeded compatriot Lina El Tannir.  The 18-year-old, who had never before progressed as far as the quarter-finals, dropped the first game but edged to victory in the second before storming away to claim a stunning 2-9 10-9 9-7 9-6 triumph in 39 minutes.

The only European success at Abbeydale Park in Sheffield was provided by France's Camille Serme, the favourite in the women's U17 championship who dismissed Malaysia's 3/4 seed Wee Wern Low 9-4 9-6 9-6 to earn her first British Junior Open crown.

Egypt secured both titles in the U15 championships:  In the men's final, Egypt's top seed Mohamed El Shorbagy clinched his first British Open title by beating compatriot Adel Mohamed El Zarka, a 3/4 seed, 8-10 9-5 3-9 9-6 9-4.

The women's final saw favourite Heba El Torky extend her unbeaten record in the event to three years as she beat Canada's 3/4 seed Laura Gemmell 9-4 9-2 9-0.  Since losing the U13 final in January 2003, El Torky won the U13 title in 2004 and her first U15 crown last year.  The win brought disappointment, however, to the Canadian who was in her fourth successive junior U15 final after winning the U15 US Open, Canadian Open and Scottish Open titles over the past month.

Having removed the top two seeds in the semi-finals, the two 3/4 seeds fought it out for the Men's U13 title.  Egypt's Karim Fathy ultimately prevailed, beating Pakistan's Hamza Bokhari 9-3 9-2 9-4 in 29 minutes.

In the women's U13 final, Malaysia's Yan Xin Tan avenged her defeat in last year's quarter-finals by upsetting Egypt's top seed and defending champion Nour El Tayeb 5-9 9-7 9-1 9-2 in 41 minutes.  The 3/4 seed had earlier upset another Egyptian, second seed Menat Allah Naser, 10-9 9-2 10-8 – while in the other semi-final El Tayeb had fought back from 2/0 down to beat USA's Olivia Blatchford 9-2 2-9 7-9 9-5 9-3.

Joe Lee Becomes First British Junior Open Finalist In Four Years

Joe Lee
has become England’s first British Junior Open Squash Championships finalist for four years after beating Germany’s Norman Junge 9-1 9-3 9-1 in the semi-finals of the U17 event in Sheffield.  The 16-year-old from West Molesey in Surrey, who was seeded only to reach the quarter-finals, will meet Egypt’s second seed Mohamed Ali Anwar Reda in the final of the Powerplaysports-sponsored event at Abbeydale Park.

"I've only reached the last 16 in the British Junior Open before, so I'm definitely looking forward to playing the final," said the jubilant son of former England junior international Danny Lee after his semi-final triumph.

Joe Lee - the first English British Junior Open finalist since James Willstrop (now ranked six in the world) won the U19 crown in 2002 - is the lowest seed to reach any of the eight finals this year.

Domestic interest in the U19 events expired with the defeats of both Chris Simpson and Rachel Willmott.  Simpson, the European Junior champion from Brighton, took a game from Aamir Atlas Khan in the men's semi-finals, but the second-seeded Pakistani ultimately claimed a 9-7 6-9 9-6 10-8 victory.

Willmott, the 17-year-old six-times national junior champion from Horsham in Sussex, lost out 9-3 9-6 9-1 to event favourite Raneem El Weleily, the 17-year-old Egyptian who is already ranked 36 in the world.  El-Weleily will face compatriot Lina El Tannir in one of three all-Egyptian finals.

Day 4

El Torky Sisters Set Up Semi Clash In British Junior Open

Egypt's Nouran El Torky became the first unseeded player to reach the semi-finals in the Powerplaysports British Junior Open Squash Championships when she upset seeded compatriot Salma Nassar 9-3 9-10 9-1 9-5 in today's (Thursday) quarter-finals of the women's U15 event in Sheffield.

The 13-year-old from Alexandria will now face her older sister Heba El Torky, the defending champion and top seed, who defeated another Egyptian Salma Hany 9-3 9-0 10-9.

While English interest in the women's U15 event expired when 14-year-old Northumbrian Kimberley Hay went down in straight games to Canada's Laura Gemmell, there was a dramatic domestic fight back in the men's U13 event when Surrey's David Wardle beat Egypt's Nasr Magdy 6-9 1-9 9-1 10-9 10-9 to become the only European through to the event's last eight.

Sussex stars Chris Simpson and Rachel Willmott claimed their anticipated places in the last four of the U19 events with comfortable straight games wins in the quarter-finals – Simpson beating Egypt's 5/8 seed Tarek Momen 9-6 9-7 9-1 to set up a meeting with Pakistan's second seed Aamir Atlas Khan in the men's event, and Willmott triumphing 9-7 9-2 9-4 over France's Soraya Renai to prepare the way to meet Egyptian favourite Raneem El Weleily in the women's semis.

Surrey's Joe Lee is one match away from a place in the men's U17 final.  The 16-year-old from West Molesey, seeded 5/8, beat Denmark's Kristian Olesen 9-7 9-5 9-3 and now faces Germany's 9/16 seed Norman Junge in the semi-finals.

Ashour Dashes Salazars' Birthday Hopes

Just four days after meeting each other in the final of the Scottish Junior Open in Edinburgh, Mexican twins Arturo Salazar and Cesar Salazar were dealt a cruel blow on their 18th birthday when they were both beaten by Egypt's world junior champion Ramy Ashour on the second day of the Powerplaysports British Junior Open Squash Championships in Sheffield, England.

Ashour, the firm favourite in the men's U19 event who won the world title when he was just 16, beat unseeded Arturo Salazar 9-5 9-3 9-2 in the second round, then a few hours later, 9/16 seed Cesar Salazar 9-5 9-0 9-0 to reach the quarter-finals.

Sussex's 3/4 seed Chris Simpson leads English interest in the U19 event.  The 18-year-old European Junior Champion from Brighton beat Canada's Andrew McDougall 9-1 9-0 10-8 and will now face Egypt's Tarek Momen for a place in the semi-finals.

In the women's U19 event, Rachel Willmott – also from Sussex – is on course to reach her predicted semi-final berth.  The 17-year-old from Horsham beat Hampshire's Louise Clark 9-2 9-6 10-9 in the second round, and now faces France's Soraya Renai in the quarter-finals.

Surrey's 5/8 seed Joe Lee is making excellent progress in the Men's U17 event after beating Egypt's Omar Magdy Ghanem 9-0 9-5 5-1 (ret.) to reach the quarter-finals.  The 16-year-old from West Molesey is now the highest seed in the top half of the draw after the shock defeats of Egyptian favourite Ahmed Osama Hawas, by South African Rudi Willemse, and Pakistan's 3/4 seed Waqar Mehboob, by Denmark's Kristian Olesen.

A record 475 players from 31 countries are competing in the 2006 Powerplaysports British Junior Open at Hallamshire and Abbeydale Park Squash Clubs in Sheffield

British Junior Open Boasts Record Entry

A record 475 players from 31 countries will compete in the 2006 Powerplaysports British Junior Open Squash Championships which get underway in Sheffield from 2 January.

Egypt, fielding a formidable squad of 65 players, are seeded to claim all but one of the titles – with world junior champion Ramy Ashour favourite to lift the men’s U19 trophy, and Raneem El Weleily, the reigning women’s world junior champion who celebrates her 17th birthday today, expected to secure her sixth successive British Junior Open crown, but the first at Under 19.

While Pakistan are expected to be represented in three of the finals, and France’s Camille Serme seeded to win the women’s U17 crown, domestic prospects are slim – with only two players seeded to fly English flags in the semi-finals:  Chris Simpson, the European Junior Champion from Brighton, is a 3/4 seed in the men’s U19 championship and Rachel Willmott, a six-times national junior champion from Horsham in Sussex, is a 3/4 seed in the women’s U19 event.

Former British Under 17 holder Deon Saffery and Fiona Moverley – both from Yorkshire - will be hoping to make an impression in the women’s Under 19 event as 5/8 seeds.

The British Junior Open Squash Championships - with roots back in the early 1920s - are regarded as the most prestigious junior championships in the world, boasting U19, U17, U15 and U13 events for men and women.

The 2006 Powerplaysports Championships will take place at Hallamshire and Abbeydale Park Squash Clubs in Sheffield, Yorkshire, from 2-6 January - with the finals being held at Abbeydale on the club's recently-installed all-glass show court.

POWER PLAY FOR JUNIOR OPEN

Power Play Sports signs a three year deal to sponsor the British Junior Open

After backing the event for the first time early this year, Powerplaysports have now signed a three-year agreement with England Squash for the title sponsorship of the British Junior Open from 2006.

The British Junior Open Squash Championships are regarded as the most prestigious junior championships in the world, boasting U19, U17, U15 and U13 events for men and women with roots back in the early 1920s.

The 2006 Powerplaysports Championships will take place at Hallamshire and Abbeydale Squash Clubs in Sheffield, Yorkshire, from 2-6 January - with the finals being held at Abbeydale on the club's recently-installed all-glass show court.

Alan Edge, Managing Director of Powerplaysports, states that the signing of this event for three years, demonstrates the commitment of the company to promote junior and grass roots racket sports at home and abroad:  "We are proud to be associated with the British Junior Open, which attracts players from all over the world.  As a company we have a commitment to the future of squash and currently sponsor the Yorkshire, Lancashire and North West Counties Squash leagues."

Powerplaysports Ltd, are manufacturers of high quality sporting goods, specialising in Squash, Tennis and Badminton rackets and accessories. They are also the exclusive U.K. distributors for Squash Design clothing.

England Squash Competition & Events Manager Chris Nutley said:  "England Squash are delighted that, after stepping in at short notice to sponsor the 2005 event, Powerplaysports have signed a long term deal with us, thereby ensuring that the championships will continue to grow and cement its place as the world’s premier Junior Open.

"Sheffield is the well-established home of the British Junior Open and we can once again count on the fantastic support of the Sheffield Events Unit, Hallamshire SC and Abbeydale SC, without whom the event would not be possible," added Nutley.

The 2006 event has attracted a record entry of 540 players from 31 countries, from as far afield as Australia, Peru and Jordan.  Egypt and Pakistan will be looking to continue their dominance of the event and add to the four and three titles, respectively, that they claimed in January.    Egypt will arrive in Sheffield with a formidable squad of 65 players that includes both current World Junior Champions:  Raneem El Weleily was crowned the women's world champion in Belgium in July whilst Ramy Ashour won the World Junior Men’s title back in 2004, at the age of 16!

The English challenge will once again be spearheaded by Chris Simpson (Hampshire) in the Drysdale Cup (the Boy’s Under 19 event).  Six-times National Champion Rachel Willmott (Sussex), former British Under 17 holder Deon Saffery (Yorkshire) and Fiona Moverley (Yorkshire) will all be hoping to make an impression in the Girl’s Under 19 Championship
