Gilis Secures Second Title Of Season

Tinne Gilis with the Richmond Open trophy
Belgium’s Tinne Gilis claimed her second win of the campaign as she took
home the Richmond Open title on Saturday afternoon.
The Belgian had already laid claim to the Squash On Fire Open title, her
first PSA World Tour crown, earlier this year, and came into this week’s
Challenger 30 level event at the Country Club of Virginia as the top
seed.
After a first round bye, the Belgian took on Australia’s Jessica
Turnbull in the second round, and took her first win of the week in
straight games. She then came up against Egypt’s Sana Ibrahim in the
quarter finals. It went to four games, with only one of those not being
an 11-9 scoreline either way, but Gilis got the job done.
Frenchwoman Melissa Alves was then beaten in the semi-finals in their
first meting on Tour, before the Belgian faced Egypt’s Nada Abbas in the
final. Abbas had already beaten the tournament’s No.2 seed, Salma Hany,
on route, and won the opening game of the final. From there, though,
Gilis was in control, dropping just 11 points across the next three
games to take the title in Richmond.

Quarter Finals
Abbas Downs No.2 Seed Hany

Nada Abbas (left) and Salma Hany (right) prior to
their quarter final clash at the Richmond Open
In the lone all-Egyptian clash on quarter finals day in Richmond, Nada
Abbas got the better of No.2 seed Salma Hany to reach the semi-finals.
The pair had only played once before on the PSA Tour, with Hany having
won their second round contest at the 2019 J.P. Morgan China Squash Open
comfortably.
That was not the case this time round, though, as Abbas took the early
lead by winning the opening game 11-8. Hany fought back to win the
second on a tie-break 14-12, but Abbas came battling back once more. She
went on to win both the third and fourth games to knock out the
tournament’s No.2 seed.
The Egyptian will now face Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold in the semi-finals,
after the No.5 seed downed England’s Katie Malliff in five games. Arnold
led twice after winning both the first and third games on tie-breaks,
the third going all the way to 16-14.
However, Malliff was able to fight back on both occasions, winning the
second and fourth games by 11-7 scorelines. However, the Malaysian came
out strongly in the deciding fifth game, and allowed the Englishwoman to
score just a single point, as she booked her semi-final spot in
Virginia.
The other semi-final will see Belgium’s Tinne Gilis and France’s Melissa
Alves go head-to-head. The tournament’s top seed came through against
Egypt’s Sana Ibrahim in a tight four games, while Alves defeated Egypt’s
Hana Ramadan in three.
The semi-finals of the Richmond Open will take place on Friday, May 12.

Round 2
Katie Malliff
downed Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam in round 2

The second round of the Richmond Open saw the seeds come into the draw,
and England’s Katie Malliff downed Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam to
move through to the quarter finals.
The Englishwoman was unseeded when she came into the tournament, beating
wildcard Avery Park in the opening round. She then came up against No.4
seed Subramaniam in the last 16 of the Challenger 30 level competition,
which is being held at the Country Club of Virginia.
Malliff won the opening game 11-7, but then saw the Malaysian fight back
to take the second by the same scoreline. The Englishwoman then took the
lead for a second time, but Subramaniam levelled once more to take the
match into a deciding game. Malliff came out firing in the fifth, and
she took it comfortably to secure her spot in the quarter finals.
She will now take on another Malaysian in the quarter finals, in Rachel
Arnold. The tournament’s No.5 seed was in control of the match, going
two games up. She was then 3-0 up in the third game, when Beecroft
retired from the contest through injury.
Top seeds Tinne Gilis and Salma Hany both won in straight games to get
their campaigns underway. Hany is joined in the last eight by fellow
Egyptians Sana Ibrahim, Hana Ramadan and Nada Abbas, who all took wins
on the second day of the competition.
The quarter finals of the Richmond Open will take place on Thursday, May
11.

Round 1
Wildcard Kamal Among First Round Winners

Malak Kamal (right) in action against Ineta Mackevica
(left) in Richmond
Tournament wildcard Malak Kamal is through to the last 16 of the
Richmond Open after beating Latvia’s Ineta Mackevica in the first round.
Kamal came into the Challenger 30 level competition as one of two
wildcards, and she faced the Latvian No.1 on Tuesday evening. She won
the opening game, but saw Mackevica, who has been inside the world’s top
50 previously, fight back. Kamal was able to regroup after losing the
second game, and she went on to win in four to book her second round
berth.
She will be joined in the second round by compatriot Jana Shiha, who
defeated New Zealand’s Kaitlyn Watts in four games. The Kiwi looked she
might be mounting a comeback after winning the third game, but Shiha
quashed that in the fourth, winning 11-4 to advance.
Elsewhere, Marta Dominguez Fernandez won the all-Spanish battle on
Tuesday. She took on compatriot, and the national No.1, Cristina Gomez,
but it was Fernandez who took the win. She won in straight games to make
her way though to the second round.
The English trio of Katie Malliff, Millie Tomlinson and Lucy Beecroft
were all victorious on the opening day. Malliff and Beecroft both won in
straight games, while Tomlinson had to fight through a tricky contest
with Polish No.1 Karina Tyma to advance.
Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk and Australia’s Jessica Turnbull were the other
two winners on the opening day in Virginia. Turnbull downed 9/16 seeding
member Saskia Beinhard to cause an upset, while the Hongkonger got the
better of Egypt’s Rana Ismail.

Preview
Tinne Gilis will be the top seed this week in Richmond

The biggest tournament of the week will be the Richmond Open, which will
begin on Tuesday, May 9 in Virginia, United States.
This will be the first time the tournament has moved up to Challenger 30
level status, and it has pulled in several members of the world’s top
25. Egypt’s Hana Moataz took the victory here in 2022, with the likes of
Rowan Elaraby and Joshna Chinappa having also won this title.
This year, Belgium’s Tinne Gilis will be the top seed for the
competition. She will be aiming to win her second title of the season
following her victory at the Bronze level Squash on Fire Open in
Washington, D.C. back in February.
Meanwhile, it has been almost ten years since Egypt’s Salma Hany was a
winner on Tour. Her last title came at the 8th Leg of the 2013 Malaysian
Squash Tour. She has appeared in six finals since, and she will be
hoping it will be seventh time lucky if she makes the final this week as
the No.2 seed.
Fellow Egyptians Nada Abbas, Hana Ramadan and Sana Ibrahim will all be
among the top eight seeds. Frenchwoman Melissa Alves and the Malaysian
pair of Sivasangari Subramaniam and Rachel Arnold will also be in that
bracket.
In total, 13 nations will be represented this week in Richmond, with the
Spanish duo of Cristina Gomez and Marta Dominguez Fernandez facing off
on the opening day of competition. England’s Lucy Beecroft, Katie
Malliff and Millie Tomlinson will all feature, while the lone American
will be teenage wildcard Avery Park, who will be playing on Tour for the
first time.
The event takes place from Tuesday, May 9 to Saturday, May 13 at the
Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, where Tinne Gilis is the top seed
for the tournament. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on Twitter and
