Damming Claims Victory After Epic Final
Dutchman Rowan Damming secured his second title of the campaign after
winning a 96-minute final at the ECP Open on the Tour de las Americas.
The reigning World Junior Champion came into the Challenger 5 level
competition, the last on this year’s Tour de las Americas, as the No.5
seed.
After a first-round bye, the Dutchman got his campaign underway with a
straight games victory over Colombia’s Felipe Tovar. He then followed
that with wins over No.3 seed Joeri Hapers, and Brazil’s Pedro Mometto
to make it through to the final.
The final saw Damming take on Colombia’s Andres Herrera, the No.2 seed,
and it was an epic. The pair were level after two games before the
Colombian took a tight third game to move into the lead.
Herrera then had his opportunity to claim the win in the fourth game,
but Damming fought back to take it 13-11. That gave him the momentum,
but the fifth game also went to a tie-break as well. It would be the
Dutchman that would eventually take home the title, winning the final
after 96 minutes |
Preview
The last event on this year’s Tour de las Americas will be the ECP Open,
which takes place this week, starting on Wednesday, May 24.
The five-day competition will feature a men’s Challenger 5 level
tournament, which will be held at the Esporte Clube Pinheiros in Sao
Paulo.
American Christopher Gordon will be the top seed for the event, and the
only man inside the top 100 to be playing this week. The Colombian duo
of Andres Herrera and Edgar Ramirez Bautista, along with the Brazilian
duo of Guilherme Melo and Diego Gobbi will all be seeded.
Melo reached the final of this event on home soil last year, losing out
to Guatemala’s Josue Enriquez. He will be looking to go one better this
time round in Sao Paulo.
The pair will be joined by plenty of other home hopes in the event this
week. In total, 11 of the 24-strong draw will hail from Brazil. Pedro
Mometto will be among the 9/16 seeding bracket, while Murilo Penteado
will be the leading Brazilian junior in the draw.
Paraguayan No.1 Francesco Marcantonio adds to the South American
contingent inside the top eight seeds. Belgium No.1 Joeri Hapers and
Dutchman Rowan Damming, the reigning World Junior Champion, will also be
seeded.
