Lovejoy Captures Tortola Classic Title

Spencer Lovejoy in action at the 2023 Oracle NetSuite Open
Spencer Lovejoy

USA’s World No.80 Spencer Lovejoy is the 2023 Carey Olson Tortola Classic champion after he overcame Pakistan’s World No.71 Muhammad Asim Khan in a five-game thriller at the Tortola Sports Club last night.

Lovejoy came into the final having beaten top seed Bernat Jaume the day before and he took full advantage of a slow start from his opponent, who looked like he might be feeling the effects of a five-game battle with No.2 seed Andrew Douglas in his semi-final.

Lovejoy took the opener with relative ease, winning 11-5, but Khan came out stronger in the second, with his consistent work down the backhand wall helping him sneak the second 14-12 to draw level.

The man from Pakistan picked off his opponent in a one-sided third game, dropping just two points to put himself on the verge of an eighth PSA title. However, Lovejoy upped the pace and the intensity in the fourth, which paid dividends as he won seven straight points from 6-4 down to send the match into a decider.

It looked to be going the way of Khan as he opened up a 7-1 lead, but a big push from Lovejoy saw him come back to draw level. Khan had a further opportunity with championship ball at 10-9 but he was unable to convert. Soon, Lovejoy found himself championship ball up and a backhand drop from Khan found the tin instead of the front wall, handing Lovejoy his second PSA title and his first since June 2019.

Bernat Jaume

The Carey Olson Tortola Classic 2023 gets underway tomorrow from the Tortola Sports Club in the British Virgin Islands with 24 men looking to capture the Challenger 10 title.

The top seed for the event is Spain’s World No.58 Bernat Jaume. The Spaniard will be looking to reach his second final of the season after finishing as runner-up at the Odense Open in March. Jaume will face the winner of local Dion Anselm or Egypt’s Mohamad Zakaria in round two after receiving a bye in the opening round.

USA’s Andrew Douglas is the No.2 seed for the event and after a semi-final finish last year, will be looking to go on step further to give himself a chance of capturing his first event since May last year this week. Douglas will face either Taylor Carrick or Seb Donovan in the last 16 after a round one bye.

Douglas’ compatriot Spencer Lovejoy was beaten by Douglas in last year’s quarter finals but after a successful U.S Nationals where he reached the finals and gathering momentum on court in the Pan American Championships, Lovejoy will be hoping for a big run in the event this year.

Many local players feature in the opening round of the event, most under the guidance of coach Adam Murrills and will be determined to put in strong performances on home soil.

For more information on the event, where available see the PSA Live Scores page, or follow on PSAChallengerTourLivestreams, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & TikTok. Selected events will also be streamed live on SQUASHTV.
