Final
Golan Secures First Title In Four Years

Borja Golan (centre left) and Baptiste Masotti (second
right) with the tournament organisers
Spain’s Borja Golan claimed a first victory on Tour in four years after
defeated home favourite Baptiste Masotti in the final of the Open
International Niort Venise Verte on Friday evening.
The Spaniard, who reached a career-high of World No.5 in 2014, came into
the tournament as the No.3 seed, and received a bye through the opening
day’s action in Niort, France.
Golan then overcame the challenge of Israeli No.1 Daniel Poleshchuk in
straight games, winning 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 in 33 minutes to move through
to the quarter finals. In the last eight, he took on England’s Ben
Smith, taking the victory in four games to reach the semis, where he was
seeded to reach in the competition.
Rui Soares was his semi-final opponent, after the Portuguese No.1 had
defeated No.2 seed Auguste Dussourd in the last eight. Golan made sure
there would be no repeat of that, defeating his Iberian rival in
straight games, 11-8, 11-6, 12-10, to move through to the final.
The final saw the Spaniard take on top seed Baptiste Masotti on home
soil. He won the first game 11-6, but saw the World No.21 take the
second game by the same scoreline. Golan was able to wrestle back the
momentum in the third, and he carried that through the fourth as well,
winning 3-1 overall to secure the 33rd title of his impressive career. |
Semi Finals
Masotti and Golan Into Final

France’s Baptiste Masotti (above in white) is into the final of the Open
International Niort Venise Verte on home soil, and he will take on
Spaniard Borja Golan for the Challenger 20 level crown on Friday.
The Frenchman came into the tournament as the top seed, and he took on
Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani for a place in the final. The World No.21 came
through in straight games, winning 11-7, 11-5, 11-5 in half an hour to
advance to the final of this event for the second time.
He will face Spain’s Borja Golan on Friday, after the former World No.5
rolled back the years to defeat Portuguese No.1 Rui Soares in straight
games. Golan took the first game 11-8, before then doubling his
advantage following the second game, as he claimed that 11-6. The third
was much tighter, going all the way to a tie-break. It was the Spaniard
who took it 12-10, to secure his passage through to the final.
The final of the Open International Niort Venise Verte will take place
on Friday, November 11, with Borja Golan and Baptiste Masotti doing
battle for the Challenger 20 level crown.

Quarter Finals
Soares Continues Good Form With Knockout Win

Portugal’s Rui Soares caused the big upset on quarter finals day,
knocking out home favourite Auguste Dussourd in a five-game to move
through to the last four of the Open International Niort Venise Verte.
The Portuguese No.1 took an early lead against the Frenchman at Squash
du Marais in Niort, but saw Dussourd fight back to win the second game.
The same pattern followed over the next two games, but it was Soares who
came through the deciding game to win in five, and to move through to
the semi-finals.
He will now face Spaniard Borja Golan, after the former World No.5
overcame the challenge of England’s Ben Smith. Golan took the first
couple of games before seeing the Englishman fight back to win the third
game. The Spaniard fought through in four to make it into the semis.
The other semi-final will see top seed Baptiste Masotti take on Egypt’s
Ibrahim Elkabbani after the pair came through their respective quarter
finals. The Egyptian had to fight through a five-gamer against Simon
Herbert, while Masotti beat Rory Stewart.
The semi-finals of the Open International Niort Venise Verte will take
place on Thursday, November 10, with the last four going head-to-head
for places in the final. All the action will be streamed live on their
YouTube channel.

Round 2
England’s Smith and Herbert Cause Upsets

Simon Herbert and Declan James
The second round of the Open International Niort Venise Verte threw up a
couple of surprises, with England’s Simon Herbert and Ben Smith making
it into the quarter finals at the expense of seeded players.
Herbert got the better of fellow Englishman Declan James on the second
day of the Challenger 20 level competition. The World No.89 won the
first game 11-7, but saw his compatriot tag the second game to level the
scores at 1-1. Both the third and fourth games went to tie-breaks, with
both men having their chances. In the end, Herbert won both by a 13-11
scoreline to win in four games, beating the former World No.15 to make
it through to the quarter finals.
He will be joined in the last eight by another Englishman in Ben Smith.
The Swiss Open champion got the better of Spaniard Ivan Perez on Tuesday
evening. Smith won the first game 11-5 but saw the No.8 seed battle back
to take the second game on a tie-break 12-10. From there, though, the
Englishman was in control, and came through to win in four to book his
spot in the semis.
Elsewhere, the French duo of Baptiste Masotti and Auguste Dussourd made
their way into the last eight on home soil. The top seed downed Marek
Panacek in straight games, while Dussourd had to fight back from the
brink to win in five. He found himself 2-0 down to Italian No.1 Yuri
Farneti, but eventually won after almost 70 minutes of action, winning
the final game of their contest 11-3.
Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani also had to fight back from two down in his
match against Englishman James Peach, eventually winning in a deciding
fifth game. Spaniard Borja Golan, Portuguese No.1 Rui Soares and
Scotland’s Rory Stewart complete the quarter final line-up.
The Open International Niort Venise Verte continues on Wednesday,
November 9, with the last eight doing battle for places in the
semi-finals. You can watch all the action on their YouTube channel.

Round 1
Panacek Takes All-Czech Clash On Opening Day

The opening day of the Open International Niort Venise Verte saw an
all-Czech clash, with Marek Panacek taking down Jakub Solnicky to
advance at Squash du Marais.
The Czech pair went head-to-head in the first round of the Challenger 20
level competition, and prior to this contest, Panacek was yet to take a
game off his compatriot in their three previous meetings.
It would be different this time round though, as the World No.133 took
both of the opening two games by an 11-9 scoreline. Solnicky threatened
a comeback by winning the third game 11-5, but Panacek nipped that in
the bud quickly, allowing his fellow Czechian to score just four points
in the fourth game. Panacek will now face the tournament’s top seed,
Baptiste Masotti, in the second round on Tuesday.
Panacek will be joined in the last 16 by compatriot Viktor Byrtus, after
the World No.108 defeated Welshman Elliott Morris Devred. The pair were
level after two games, but the Czechian came through to win the third
and fourth games by 11-7 scorelines to book his spot in the second
round.
Elsewhere on the opening day, Italian No.1 Yuri Farneti got the better
of Englishman Robert Downer in a tense five-game battle. The Italian was
2-1 up after three, but saw Downer fight back to win the fourth 11-4.
However, Farneti did not panic, and he returned the favour in the fifth
and final game to seal the victory.
A quartet of English players advanced from the opening day’s action in
Niort. Simon Herbert, James Peach, Ben Smith and Tom Walsh all won in
straight games, and will be joined in the second round by Israeli No.1
Daniel Poleshchuk, who defeated wildcard Laouenan Loaec in straight
games.
