Double Dutch Final
in Mexico City
The final of the Sports World Mexican Open
will be an all-Dutch affair after Netherlands players Vanessa
Atkinson, the top seed, and Annelize Naude, the seventh seed,
triumphed in the semi-finals in Mexico City.
Naude ended the brave run of Pakistan's Carla Khan - though was
stretched to five games by the English-born sixth seed who despatched
the No2 seed Jenny Duncalf in the previous round.
Naude led 2/0, but Khan fought back to force the match into a fifth game
decider.
The 27-year-old from Amsterdam maintained her focus, however,
and romped to a 9-1 9-4 4-9 5-9 9-2 victory to reach her third WISPA
World Tour final of the year.
Atkinson was in commanding form as she swept to her third successive
straight games win the event, beating Scotland's fourth seed Pamela
Nimmo 9-3 9-5 9-0.
Atkinson, 28, from The Hague, is one win away from her fourth WISPA
title this year.
04-Sep:
Duncalf Hopes Dashed
In Mexico City ...
Pakistan's Carla Khan upset the form book in the quarter-finals
of the Sports World Mexican Open when she triumphed in five games over
England's second seed Jenny Duncalf in Mexico City.
English-born Khan fought back from a game down against her higher-ranked
opponent to take a 2/1 lead. But Duncalf, the world No12 from Yorkshire
who has just been selected to make her England debut in this month's
World Team Championships in Amsterdam, reasserted her authority on the
match to draw level.
In the closely-contested decider, sixth seed Khan edged ahead to claim
her notable 4-9 9-4 9-6 3-9 9-7 victory - and a place in the semi-finals
against seventh seed Annelize Naude, who also scored an upset
over an English player when she beat third-seeded Stephanie Brind 8-10
9-6 10-8 9-7.
The other semi-final will be the encounter predicted by the seedings,
when top seed Vanessa Atkinson takes on Scotland's fourth seed
Pamela Nimmo. Atkinson, the world No3 from the Netherlands, beat
fifth seed Latasha Khan, of the USA, 9-6 9-7 9-5, while Nimmo needed
four games to overcome Egypt's eighth seed Engy Kheirallah 9-6 9-4 5-9
9-1.
03-Sep:
Teran Toppled In
Mexican Opener
Local star Samantha Teran narrowly failed
to pull off a significant upset on the opening day of action in the
Sports World Mexican Open in Mexico City.
The unseeded Mexican No1, who was laid low after a serious knee injury
last year, extended Egypt's Engy Kheirallah to four games, but
eventually went down to the eighth seed 9-5 9-1 4-9 10-9.
Kheirallah now faces Scotland's fourth seed Pamela Nimmo, who cruised to
a 9-1 9-0 9-2 win over Australia's US-based Melissa Martin.
Vanessa Atkinson, the Dutch No1 who is seeded to win her third
successive WISPA title this year at the event in Mexico City, brushed
aside Canadian qualifier Katie Patrick, winning 9-1 9-1 9-0 to set up a
quarter-final clash with five-times US champion Latasha Khan.
