Women's Professional Squash To Be Showcased In Mexico City
The upcoming Sports World Mexican Open heralds the start of a three-year plan for women's squash in Mexico ...
Mexican soccer
superstar and co-owner of Sports World,
Luis “zague” Alves, today announced that Mexico’s largest
fitness club chain is bringing professional squash to Mexico City in
“grand style”. The event, the “2004
Sports World Mexican Open” is a $20,000 USD Silver level WISPA
(Women’s International Squash Players Association) tournament that aims
at attracting some of the world’s top ranked players.
Squash, a sport ideally suited for the world’s third largest
metropolis, is experiencing a re-birth in Mexico with new squash clubs
and fitness clubs that offer squash opening up at a rapid pace. “We
want to play a lead role in this movement. Most of our clubs offer
squash and we are committed to include squash courts as part of our
fitness club expansion plans” said Marisol Ancona, director of
marketing for Sports World.
"This is the first stage of a three year plan that we hope will see the
Mexican Women's Open growing in size and eventually using an all-glass
court later on. We are also keen on developing, supporting and
promoting professional women athletes such as Samantha Teran, Sports Worlds’
sponsored WISPA player” added Marisol.
Teran, who will lead the home challenge, will be returning to the WISPA
circuit after nearly one year. Samantha had experienced a serious knee
injury last year that derailed her steady climb in the rankings. Now on
the comeback trail, she won the individual gold medal as well as the
team silver medal in the Pan American Championships held in Mexico last
month.
WISPA Executive Director Andrew
Shelley was full of praise for the squash business plan that
Sports World are embarking upon. "This new long term relationship for
WISPA will undoubtedly be very fruitful for the profile of squash in
Mexico and for our players too. This is a real boost for us, and one
that we will support in every way we can", he commented.
The SWMO championship will run from August 31st to September 5th, at
Sports World – Del Valle, one of the firm’s fitness clubs that is in a
centrally located business district of the nation’s capital.
Top seed this year will be world number three Vanessa Atkinson from Netherlands,
who only two weeks agao beat world number one Rachael Grinham in the
final of the Brunei International.
