Dunlop & VD Walke Czech Open, Prague, 14-16 Dec
France's Gregory Gaultier rounded off a magnificent final year as a junior when he lifted the Czech Open title in Prague seven days before his 19th birthday, defeating unseeded Canadian Viktor Berg 15-10 12-15 15-6 15-6 in the final. Edmonton-born Berg reached his fourth PSA Tour final following the shock upset of the tournament - a 15-9 15-12 13-15 17-15 semi-final victory over Irish favourite and former world No7 Derek Ryan.

Gregory Gaultier began the year in style by becoming the British Junior Open champion in the first week of January - and followed this by clinching the European Junior title in April. Outside the world top 100 at the beginning of the year, the 18-year-old claimed his first senior PSA Tour title in September in Barcelona, and reached a career-high 63 world ranking the following month.

Champion Campion Hits The Jackpot In Monte Carlo
Fiona Greaves and Cassie Campion
1999 champion Cassie Campion beat the title holder Fiona Geaves 9-5 9-3 9-0 in a 32-minute all-English final of the Women's Monte Carlo Classic in Monaco to claim the 20th WISPA Tour title of her career.

Second seed Geaves, the world No6 from Gloucester, raced to a 5/0 lead in the opening game, but Campion then settled into a rhythm and did not allow her opponent to win a further point until the start of the second game as she reeled off several backhand volley drops that became an enduring feature of the match. Whilst Geaves continued to fight hard, the former world champion and world No1 from Norfolk maintained control of the match as she cruised to her fourth successive straight games win in the tournament.

"I've been working on getting onto the ball early and it seemed to work today," said world No7 Campion after her second Tour win since returning to the circuit following back surgery last November. "I just hope that I can keep the winning habit into next year!"

Geaves added: "Cassie didn't let me join her party. She was just too strong today."

Cairns & Atkinson Celebrate Second Pro Titles In Zurich
England's Mark Cairns and Netherlands' English-born Vanessa Atkinson both celebrated their second professional title successes with straight games final victories in Zurich, Switzerland.

Cairns, at 34 the second-oldest player in the PSA top forty, claimed his first tour title since winning the Hungarian Open in September 1995 - his maiden PSA success - when he dismissed Switzerland's Lars Harms 15-8 15-9 15-4 in the final of the Prosperco Grasshopper Cup. Local fans had much to celebrate, however, as fifth seed Harms was the first Swiss player to reach the Grasshopper Cup final for more than six years - just a week after upsetting the seedings in the USA to reach the final of the Tech Valley Open in New York.

In the final of the Women's Deloitte & Touche Cup, second seed Vanessa Atkinson upset Australia's top seed Rachael Grinham 9-6 9-1 9-7 to claim the WISPA World Tour title exactly twelve months after registering her first, by winning the Bronxville Open in the USA.

OWENS & ONG ON SONG IN MACAU
New Zealander Carol Owens and Malaysian Ong Beng Hee came away with the spoils in the first joint men's and women's Macau Squash Open after straight games finals victories over England's Stephanie Brind and Stefan Casteleyn, from Belgium, respectively.

Second seed Owens, the event favourite after the withdrawal of top-seeded compatriot Leilani Joyce, was too strong for Brind who recently jumped six places to a career-high world No4.  World No3 Owens, formerly from Melbourne and now based in Auckland, swept to a 9-5 9-5 9-0 win to claim her first WISPA World Tour title since winning the World Open in Scotland a year ago.

Ong Beng Hee, the 21-year-old world No9, defeated sixth seed Stefan Casteleyn 15-10 15-11 15-4 to win his first PSA Tour title since last December when he became the first home player to secure the Malaysian Open trophy.  Whilst the Macau Open was the former world junior champion from Penang's tenth PSA Tour final appearance of his career, it was the sixth this year of Belgian Casteleyn, the one-time world No7.

Women's Himmerland Tuborg Open, Farso, Denmark, 19-22 Sep

Final:
[4] Isabelle Stoehr (FRA) bt [2] Ellen Petersen (DEN)   9-10 5-9 9-0 9-6 9-0

STOEHR STORMS TO HIMMERLAND SUCCESS
France's Isabelle Stoehr claimed the first WISPA World Tour title of her career in dramatic style in Denmark when she despatched the event's top two seeds to lift the Women's Himmerland Tuborg Squash Open trophy in Farso. The fourth seed from Tours resisted a determined fight-back from England's Vicky Botwright in the semi-finals to upset the top seed 9-7 9-1 6-9 5-9 9-6 - while in the other semi-final local star Ellen Petersen, the No2 seed, came back from 8-2 down in the fifth game to beat third-seeded South African Annelize Naude 9-6 9-2 5-9 4-9 10-8.

Petersen seemed in control in the final, taking a two-game lead - but the plucky Stoehr, the 22-year-old world No33 who was runner-up in the world junior open final in 1997 and beaten European junior open finalist the following year, soon took the upper hand, and took the next three games against the world No21 to clinch an impressive 9-10 5-9 9-0 9-6 9-0 victory.

Coming on the heels of Thierry Lincou's impressive return to action after injury, and Gregory Gaultier's first senior title in Barcelona last week, it looks as though squash in France is on a high.

GAULTIER GRABS FIRST PSA TITLE
France's twice European junior champion Gregory Gaultier claimed his first senior title on the PSA Tour when he beat Australia's Dan Jenson 15-7 15-10 17-15 in the final of the Ciutat de Barcelona Squash Open.

Unseeded Gaultier, 18, from Aix-en-Provence, took out Canada's second seed Shahier Razik in the opening round, before overcoming England's third seed Adrian Grant to reach the final.

It was a disappointing outcome for seventh seed Jenson who is making his comeback after a year layoff recovering from a back injury.  The 26-year-old from Adelaide, a world mixed doubles gold medallist in December 1997, reached a career-high world No5 in January 1999 after an impressive run the previous year which included a semi-final berth in the 1998 British Open.

It was Tranfield's second successive fightback in the event, after the world No16 from Yorkshire, now based in Milton Keynes, beat county compatriot Janie Thacker in a five-game semi-final. The victory over Atkinson, the six-times Dutch national champion ranked 11in the world, extends Tranfield's unbeaten record in WISPA Tour finals since March 1997. Tranfield, who is only weeks away from gaining a PhD in 'Sports Psychology', will now focus her attention on the British Open next week in Birmingham, where, seeded 14, she faces Denmark's Ellen Petersen in the opening round before a likely confrontation with New Zealand's defending champion and top seed Leilani Joyce.

WISPA Seattle Open, Seattle, 17-20 May, $36k

Final:
[2] Sarah Fitz-Gerald (Aus) bt [1] Carol Owens (Aus)  9-6 9-7 9-2

Former world champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald continued her 2001 unbeaten run with a 3-0 victory over world champion Carol Owens in the Seattle final.

New Zealand-based Owens raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening game, moving her opponent around the court while boasting and dropping well. The world champion then started to make unforced errors and Fitz-Gerald gained the momentum, reeling off eight straight points to reach game-ball. Owens salvaged two points after forehand errors by her opponent before Fitz-Gerald closed the first game with a stunning forehand cross-court attacking shot combined with an unforced error by Owens.

No more than a single point separated the pair up to 7-7 in an evenly-contested second game. Sarah's great boasts and backhand drop nicks were countered by Carol's impressive volley drops and boasts. After a disputed point which gave game-ball to Fitz-Gerald, Owens retrieved service once, then tinned a backhand drop to give her opponent the second game. The mighty Fitz-Gerald was always in control in the third game and ultimately cruised to victory in 43 minutes - the sell-out Seattle crowd giving both players a standing ovation for their outstanding play.

"I am glad to have this win going into the British Open" commented Fitz-Gerald. "I am looking forward to the British Open. I will use the next two weeks for preparation". The British Open is the only major women's title that has eluded Fitz-Gerald in her career.

44 career titles, 8 in a row since December, still unbeaten in 2001 - no-one's betting that she won't add that missing link ...

[2] Fiona Geaves (ENG) bt [3] Cassie Campion (ENG)  5-9 9-4 9-6 9-5

GEAVES GRABS LAS VEGAS GLORY
England's Fiona Geaves, the second seed, ended comeback compatriot Cassie Campion's run  to lift the title after defeating the defending champion 5-9 9-4 9-6 9-5 in the final. Geaves' success against the former world champion and world No1 from Norfolk marks a new high for the 33-year-old from Gloucester who has rejuvenated her career since training at nearby Wycliffe College, the school base for a successful young squash squad. The world No10, whose best Las Vegas Open success to date was a semi-final berth in 1999, reached her career-best world No6 ranking back in 1995 - but marked her return to top-flight squash last December when she won the Monte Carlo Open, then in February reached the final of the British National Championships.

After a week's rest, Geaves moves on to the Seattle Open, where her first round opponent in the WISPA World Tour event on 17 May will be No2 seed Carol Owens, the reigning world champion from Australia. Meanwhile third seed Campion, who upset top-seeded compatriot Linda Charman-Smith to reach the Las Vegas final in only her second event since returning to competitive action in April after a five-month layoff following back surgery, heads straight for San Francisco. The 28-year-old world No12 is third seed in the WISPA International Challenge, beginning on 9 May, and is again seeded to meet Charman-Smith in the last four before the winner takes on Australia's top seed Sarah Fitz-Gerald in the likely final clash.

ENGLAND CELEBRATE EUROPEAN DOUBLE
The strength of English squash in Europe was emphatically underlined in the Netherlands when England decisively retained both the men's and women's titles in the European Team Squash Championships in Eindhoven.

England's men claimed their ninth successive title and 26th since the inaugural championships in 1973 when they crushed 2nd seeds France 4-0.  In a second successive final triumph over France, Nottingham-based Yorkshireman Simon Parke, the England No1, dropped one game in beating French No1 Renan Lavigne 9-6 9-3 8-10 10-8, whilst team-mates Mark Chaloner, Nick Taylor and British National champion Lee Beachill secured their victories in straight games.

The women's team extended their remarkable unbeaten reign in the competition since 1978 when they whitewashed Denmark 3-0 in their first ever European final appearance.  Sussex's world No4 Linda Charman-Smith led the assault, beating Danish champion Ellen Petersen 9-0 9-3 9-0, whilst Lincolnshire's Tania Bailey and Gloucestershire's Fiona Geaves also won in straight games to maintain the squad's run throughout the event without conceding a single game.

Egypt's world junior champion Kareem Darwish netted his third PSA Tour title in seven weeks when he defeated local hero Shahid Zaman 15-5 10-15 15-12 12-15 15-3 in the final. Seventh seed Zaman, the 18-year-old Pakistan junior champion, had already upset two higher-ranked players to reach the final - and then twice fought back against the opponent who beat him in the World Junior semi-finals in Italy last July. Darwish, the 19-year-old top seed from Cairo who is already making a name for himself on the senior circuit, needed 69 minutes to overcome the plucky Pakistani - eventually claiming his fourth career PSA Tour title in his fifth final appearance.

CHIU CHARGES TO HOME VICTORY IN HONG KONG
Hong Kong's Rebecca Chiu, the fourth seed, upset the form book to win the biggest title of her career on home soil when she came back from 2-1 down to overcome England's top seed Janie Thacker 10-8 6-9 3-9 10-8 9-6 in the final of the Women's Winterthur Life Challenge Cup at the Hong Kong Football Club. The 76-minute triumph - one of the longest WISPA World Tour finals on record - marked the 22-year-old's first professional win in her home country, and her first appearance in a WISPA final since lifting the Japan Open trophy for the second successive year in June 1998. For Thacker, the 23-year-old world No31 from Rotherham in Yorkshire, the loss was doubly disappointing - coming just eight days after losing in the final of the Milo Open in Malaysia to compatriot Cassie Campion.

CAMPION CLAIMS COMEBACK CONQUEST
England's Cassie Campion claimed WISPA World Tour glory in her first tournament for almost six months when she beat compatriot Janie Thacker 9-0 9-2 9-5 in the final. The comprehensive victory provided emphatic evidence that the former world champion has fully recovered from the back injury which dogged her career in the latter part of last year and led to surgery in November. The Norfolk-born 28-year-old from Halifax in Yorkshire can now look forward to fighting her way back from her current world ranking of 12 towards the No1 position she surrendered to New Zealand's Leilani Joyce in November. Campion now heads for North America to play in the WISPA US Tour, beginning on 3rd May with her defence of the last title she won, the Las Vegas Open, where she beat Leilani Joyce in the 2000 final.

Gaultier and Willstrop in the British Junior Open final ...GAULTIER & DUNCALF WIN EUROPEAN JUNIOR TITLES
France's Gregory Gaultier became the first man in history to successfully defend the European Junior Squash Championships title when he beat England's James Willstrop 9-5 9-3 5-9 9-0 in the final. In the women's final, England's Jenny Duncalf fulfilled her seeding by defeating compatriot Laura-Jane Lengthorn 9-6 9-1 9-0 to lift the title for the first time.

Since beating Willstrop in the European final a year ago, Gregory Gaultier, 18, from Aix-en-Provence, went on to overcome his year younger junior rival in the semi-finals of the World Junior Open in Italy last July, and in the final of the British Junior Open in England this January.  However, 17-year-old Willstrop, the British Junior champion from Pontefract in Yorkshire, is likely to be the firm favourite to secure the 2002 title, and thus become the first player ever to appear in three successive men's finals.

Jenny DuncalfBy becoming the eighth successive English winner of the women's European Junior title, Jenny Duncalf, 18, from Harrogate in Yorkshire, avenged the defeat by Lancashire's Laura-Jane Lengthorn in March's British National Junior Championships' final - a defeat which prevented Duncalf from adding the U19 National title to the trophies she had earlier claimed at U12, U14 and U16.

Fitz-Gerald and Joyce after the finalSARAH FITZ-GERALD is planning to make 2001 the most successful year of her squash career. The experienced Australian campaigner powered her way to the Munich Open title with a devastating display against top seed Leilani Joyce, winning in straight games in 38 minutes. Second seed Sarah won 9-1, 9-2, 9-6 to maintain her recent streak of form. The three-times former world champion extended her unbeaten run to 16 matches and four events. She has clearly put her injury worries behind her with a sequence of results that suggest that she has her sights set on regaining the world number one slot from New Zealander Joyce. Her timing could not have been more perfect, with exciting times on the horizon for the women's game. In the semi-finals Sarah dropped just four points against England international Tania Bailey, while Leilani removed number three seed Natalie Grainger

SHABANA SHINES IN FINNISH OPEN FINAL
Seven year after claiming her first WISPA World Tour title, Egypt's Salma Shabana has added a second by winning the Savcor Women's Finnish Squash Open crown - repeating the Finnish Open success which gave her her maiden professional title in the same town of Mikkeli in December 1994! There was little to show between top seed Shabana, the 24-year-old world No23 from Cairo, and her 15-year-old second-seeded compatriot Omneya Abdel Kawy in the opening exchanges - but at 4-4 in the second game the teenager seemed to lose her confidence and the more experienced Shabana went on to take the title for the second time 10-8 9-4 9-2.

When Shabana was first crowned Finnish Open champion, she became the youngest WISPA World Tour event winner at 18 years old.  Last year, Malaysia's 16-year-old Nicol David won both the Finnish Open title, and that of WISPA's new youngest winner.  By reclaiming the Mikkeli title against an opponent now ahead of her in the world rankings, Shabana prevented 15-year-old Omneya from becoming the youngest ever WISPA champion at the same event!

DARWISH UPSETS ELBOROLOSSY FOR MAADI TITLE

World junior champion Kareem Darwish staked his claim on the No2 slot in the Egyptian squash hierarchy when he upset top-seeded compatriot Omar Elborolossy 15-9 15-9 15-7 in the final of the $15,000 Maadi Open in Cairo to successfully defend the first PSA Tour title he won just over a year ago. WHITE CLAIMS MAIDEN SUPER SERIES TITLE IN FLANDERS
Scotland's John White claimed the second Super Series title of the year - and the first of his career - after fighting back from 2-1 down to beat higher-seeded Australian Paul Price 15-10 13-15 13-15 15-13 15-7 in the final of the $60,000 Esso Flanders Squash Open in Antwerp. The Belgian title was expected to be won by a Scot - but in the biggest win of his career White trounced world champion and world No1 Peter Nicol, the top seed from Inverurie near Aberdeen, in the semi-finals - in what, incredibly, was White's first clash with a seed in the event.

The 27-year-old Australian-born world No12, who transferred his allegiance form Australia to Scotland in September 1998, is enjoying a tremendous return to form since undergoing a significant new training regime following his move from his former Netherlands base in The Hague to Nottingham in England. White's 76-minute win was a bitter blow for ninth seed Paul Price, the 24-year-old world No11 from Melbourne who was also runner-up in last October's British Open after reaching the final as 14th seed.

TWISTED WRIST HALTS GRINHAM UPSET IN KUALA LUMPUR FINAL
Australia's Natalie Grinham was heading for a historic upset against her older sister Rachael in the women's final of the Rohas-Euco Kuala Lumpur Squash Open in Malaysia when she twisted her wrist in the second game and was forced to concede the match when ahead 9-7 9-0. The disappointing conclusion to the rare WISPA World Tour meeting between the Queenslanders gives world No10 Rachael Grinham her 7th title success, and comes only eleven days after the pair became the first sisters to appear simultaneously in the world top twenty rankings.

The men's event ended in disappointment for fans of local star Kenneth Low, the 1999 champion who went down 15-12 15-2 17-16 to 3rd seed Tommy Berden - giving the 20-year-old former European Junior champion from Althere in the Netherlands his 3rd PSA Tour title.

EVANS & FITZ-GERALD GRAB GREENWICH GLORY
Australia's Sarah Fitz-Gerald claimed the 40th WISPA World Tour title of her career and Welshman David Evans gained his first PSA Tour title as British Open champion after both triumphed in the finals of the Greenwich Open in Connecticut, USA.

Fitz-Gerald, unbeaten since losing in five games to the eventual champion Carol Owens in the semi-finals of last November's World Open, came back from 5-0 down in the opening game to defeat England's world No4 Linda Charman 9-5 9-2 9-4 in the women's final. The world No3 from Melbourne's Greenwich win comes two weeks after claiming the Apawamis Open title in New York, and celebrates a notable milestone in the three-times world champion's illustrious career which has seen her win nine titles since returning to the circuit after almost a year out following knee surgery.

World No5 David Evans was seeded to win the men's Greenwich Open title, and did so in style after fighting back from a game down against a newly-inspired John White, the fourth seed from Scotland, to win 13-15 15-11 15-10 15-11.
Evans, 26, from Pontypool, who last October became the first Welshman to lift the British Open crown, now moves on to contest the Tournament of Champions next week in New York, where he is the fifth seed.

ENGLAND'S MISERY COUNTERED BY EGYPT'S CELEBRATIONS
Whilst Egypt celebrated successes in six of the eight finals in the Eye Group British Junior Open Squash Championships in Sheffield, hosts England were left without a single victory in the world's most prestigious junior tournament for the first time since 1980. The blow came in the concluding match at Abbeydale Club, the final of the blue riband Men's Under-19 event, when Yorkshire's James Willstrop lost 9-5 9-7 9-4 in 55 minutes to Frenchman Gregory Gaultier, who won the sport's prized Drysdale Cup for the first time. It was the fourth successive loss for the 17-year-old from Pontefract against the year-older full-time player from Aix-en-Provence, and a disappointing end to a great tournament for the talented youngster who already has British Junior Open wins at U14 and U17 and, unlike his opponent, a further chance to add the U19 title next year.

England also went down in the women's U19 final when Egypt's top seed Omneya Abdel Kawy beat Yorkshire's Jenny Duncalf, the second seed from Harrogate, 9-4 9-2 6-9 9-4 - Duncalf being the first player in the tournament to take a game against the highly-talented 15-year-old who represented Egypt in last year's senior world championships. England's third finalist Tom Richards, from Surrey, also took a game in the Men's U15 final but was unable to stop Egypt's top seed Rami Ashour march on to his third successive British Junior Open title with a 5-9 9-1 9-5 9-2 victory.

In the women's U17 final, Michelle Quibell became the first ever American British Junior Open champion when she ended the run of unseeded Australian Kasey Brown in a 9-1 9-0 9-4 scoreline.
