Joe Shaw:
THE PROGRAM
Each week we'll be presenting another part of Joe's revolutionary coaching programme, that helped guide David Palmer and John White to the top of the game.

The Program is applicable to all sports, and represents an invaluable resource for any coaches who have the foresight,
the inspiration, and the commitment to make it work for them.

The full program,
as originally published,
is available on the
Coaching section of
David Palmer's website.

08-Aug, Week THREE:

SELF IMAGE
How many Psychological Requirements of the Sport did you get out of the 50 items that we will discuss over these coming weeks? 5? 10? I don't think so. When I began to research this mental aspect I could only get five. I returned to University to find out, so now you know. This time we are going to discuss the first Psychological Requirement.

David Palmer reached 30 in the World and I requested Shaun Moxham to help, as I considered that I could do no more for him. I went back to finish my Book and learnt so much more that has helped them develop even further as a successful coach / athlete team. What did we do, and how did we do it? Shaun and I combined to create a new Self Image , by the use of a S.W.O.T. Analysis Review. I will discuss this in more detail in a later Paper.

SELF IMAGE
The key to success is to reprogram the self-image in the subconscious. We access the Reticular Activity System of the Brain, as this is the only part of the Brain connected to all parts of the Body. The RAS screens all information presented to us before allowing it to enter that part of the Brain that functions at a sub conscious level. The Conscious merely makes a decision. The subconscious carries out the process. The RAS can edit out or refuse to allow in any evidence that is contrary to what we have DECIDED to believe. It engages in a selective perception exercise that leads us to continue to believe what we IMAGINE to be true, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Unless a person's self Image changes in their subconscious Mind, nothing else will change. Deprogramming of David and even Shaun was essential before we could change their self-image.

What is a self-image?
The self-image is the key to human personality and human behaviour. Change the self-image and you change the personality and behaviour. The self-image sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment. It defines what you can and cannot do. Expand the self-image and you expand the area of possibility. That is all that we did with David!!!

The development of a realistic self-image imbues the individual with new capabilities and turns failure into success. We compiled the S.W.O.T. Analysis, Shaun supervised it, the self-image of David was changed absolutely overnight, and he rapidly became a real Threat and number 1 in the Rankings. You can expand your self-image and improve overnight, like David.

The imagination will always overcome will power and not one of you readers nor Coaches believe that statement. Next week I am going to prove it to you in a simple exercise. The RAS activates all of our thoughts, imagination and will power. This is not understood by most Coaches nor Athletes but it is vital to success.

Now this is important. Once the RAS has allowed information into the subconscious, IT DOES NOT HAVE THE POWER TO REJECT IT. You convince your athlete that he is capable of beating any other athlete in the World, he accesses it into his subconscious, and now no one can convince him otherwise. His self-image was changed, and we will explain later how we do it.

IT IS ONLY THE MIND'S CAPACITY TO BELIEVE WHAT IS POSSIBLE THAT LIMITS THE BODY'S ABILITY TO ACHIEVE IT.
