Joe Shaw:
THE PROGRAM
Each week we'll be presenting another part of Joe's revolutionary coaching programme, that helped guide David Palmer and John White to the top of the game.

The Program is applicable to all sports, and represents an invaluable resource for any coaches who have the foresight,
the inspiration, and the commitment to make it work for them.

The full program,
as originally published,
is available on the
Coaching section of
David Palmer's website.

15-Aug, Week FOUR:

IMAGINATION WILL ALWAYS BEAT YOUR
WILL POWER

Last week we said that the Imagination will always overcome Will Power. Let us get a wooden plank 30 feet or ten meters long, two feet or 60 cm wide and 5 inches or 13 cm thick. We put it flat on the ground. Would you walk from one end to the other? Of course you would. No problem. We then put the same plank between two adjoining buildings, three feet or one meter above the ground and ask you to walk its length. No problems?

O.K. We now put the same plank between the same two buildings 300 feet or 100 meters above the ground. Will you walk across it, bearing in mind that exactly the same atmospheric conditions exist? No? Why not? Nothing has changed. It is the same plank, the same two buildings, and the same conditions. Still no? O.K. We will give you $10,000 if you do it. Still no? Why not? It is the same plank with the same conditions, between the same two buildings, and you collect $10,000.

What has changed besides the height? Your Imagination took over the Control of your Mind. Imagination will always beat your Will Power.

USE YOUR BRAIN
Until athletes understand how to use their Brain in Sports, they are not going to be trained to full capacity that was the point of that little exercise. Sports Psychologists hate our programs because we make the Sports Psychologist redundant. Most athletes go to a Sports Psychologist when the damage had already been done.

NO SUCH THING AS A BAD DAY
Last year when David suffered an unexpected early loss, he said that he just had had a bad day, nonsense. David was not in control Physically or Mentally. I immediately advised Shaun to stop all training, and Shaun did so. He organised Blood Tests and the Cortisol level of David was 120, when it should be 75. His Ferratine (Iron) levels were down as was his Potassium, Zinc and his all-important Amino Acids were depleted. All of these problems are caused by Stress. Cortisol is the extremely dangerous Hormone that destroys the immune system of the body if it is in excess, as was David’s level. It destroys Glucose, the food of the Brain, and wrecks havoc on the neuro transmitters of your body.

Muscular tension, caused by stress, pressure or emotions generated in the heat of competition or overtraining, cranks up the blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen consumption, and levels of stress biochemicals such as Adrenalin and Cortisol. It reduces the mental clarity and fluid mind body movement required in most sports. Excess levels of Cortisol cause irritability depression and anxiety. That is what I believe happened to David.

OVERTRAIN AT YOUR PERIL
In Peter Marshall’s book Shattered, he never mentions Cortisol and that amazes me because surely it is the first indicator of his condition. It will be interesting to obtain Peters thoughts on my theorising. Elevated levels of Cortisol accelerate the level of Protein breakdown. Instead of building muscles, Cortisol actually breaks them down. That is why athletes who are overtraining find it difficult to improve their performance. They train harder with less results, create more Cortisol with more destruction, and become helpless. Helplessness leads to a huge rise of Cortisol production by the Brain. Helplessness is a crucial determinant of Depression. Exercise increases Testosterone levels and thus helps increase levels of fitness and strength. Cortisol suppresses levels of Testosterone!!!

The Adrenaline Gland produces Adrenalin and Cortisol, and Cortisol is an essential Hormone to counter Stress, but in excess it is very dangerous. David had a month off training to rebuild his muscular system whilst Shaun monitored his progress. All athletes must learn from these pointers and listen to the message of their bodies.

MONITORING THE MECHANIC
Next time we are going to explain Brain Wave lengths, how to access them, and how I have one guy out here with the same health problems that Peter Marshall experienced. He came to me after his demise and has been off work for six months. We will refer to him as the Mechanic and monitor his progress. At the moment I have him on an Electro Cranium Stimulator. In English I have him on a nuclear device and may Nuke his Brain and send him into orbit!!!! Watch this space.
