10-Oct, Final:
Botwright is the
Princess of Tenerife
England's fourth seed Vicky Botwright claimed the second WISPA
title of her career, beating Egypt's world junior champion Omneya
Abdel Kawy 9/3, 9/4, 9/5 in the final in Tenerife.
"Omneya was the great favourite but Vicky played a very good match, as
she has all week at the Centro Insular de Squash de Tenerife," said
event organiser Jordi Bercedo. "The Tenerife public are in in
love!"
"She is a very good player, and was smiling on court all tournament,
showing the fair play of the wispa girls. She was the authentic
sensation of the Prince Canary Islands Open," added Bercedo.
For the previous four years the Canary Islands Open has been a men's PSA
event. "This was the 5th Professional Squash Event I have organised,"
concluded Bercedo, "and I think that it has been the best. Now it's time
to rest and in a few days I will start to think about the Canary Islands
Open 2005!"

10-Oct, Semi-Finals:
Botwright and Kawy
in Tenerife Final
Ireland's Madeline Perry couldn't capitalise on her defeat of top seed
Rebecca Macree in the quarter-finals, as England's fourth-seeded
Vicky Botwright eased into the final with a 9/2, 9/0, 9/3 victory.
Her opponent will be third seed Omneya Abdel Kawy, who prevented
an all-English final by beating second seed Jenny Tranfield 9-6, 4-9,
9-5,9-4.
09-Oct, Quarter-Finals:
Perry shocks Beccy in Tenerife
Top seed Rebecca Macree was on the wrong end of a thrilling
quarter-final in Tenerife, as she let a 2-1 lead over Madeline
Perry slip, losing the final two games 10-9.
Perry meets Vicky Botwright in the semi-finals, with the fourth seed
winning her Lancastrian derby against Laura Lengthorn 3/1.
The second semi-final is between England's second seed Jenny Tranfield
and Egypt's world junior champion Omneya Abdel Kawy, both winning 3/1
against Carla Khan and Latasha Khan, respectively.
08-Oct, Round One:
English Advance in Tenerife
The Prince Canary Islands Open, being held as a WISPA event this year
after five years of being a PSA event, saw a strong English contingent
advance to the quarter-finals in Tenerife.
Top seed Rebecca Macree beat Canadian Qualifier Marnie Baizley in
straight games to set up a quarter-final with Ireland's Madeline
Perry.
An English semi-finalist in the top half is guaranteed as Vicky
Botwright meets Lancastrian team-mate Laura Lengthorn, both enjoying
comfortable first round wins.
In the bottom half of the draw, Jenny Tranfield is the sole
English representative, and faces Pakistan's Carla Khan for a
place in the semi-finals. The winner meets the USA's Latasha Khan
or world junior champion Omneya Abdel Kawy.
22-Sep: Tenerife turns to the Ladies
Previously held as a men's event, this year's Prince Canary Islands
Open, to be held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife's “Centro Insular de Squash”,
will this year be a WISPA women's event, with some of the world's top
players competing in Tenerife for the first time.
Top seeds for the title are England's
Rebecca Macree Jenny
Tranfield and Vicky Botwright, along with Egypt's world
junior champion Omneya Abdel Kawy. Becky Botwright, who
won the European Individual Championship last week in Bratislava, and
American Champion Latasha Khan will also be participating in the
Tournament.
Spanish participation sees the Catalunyan and Spanish Number 1
Olga
Puigdemont in the main draw, with the two best valencian players
Estela Carbonell and Chantal Morós in the qualifying competition.
However the local chance is represented by Laura Alonso, who will
participate in a WISPA Tournament for the first time in her career,
after winning several titles on the Spanish National Circuit. She is
also the first female Canarian player to participate in a WISPA Event.
The Canary Islands International Open was traditionally a tournament for
male professionals. On this occasion the Canarian Squash Federation
celebrates a women's event in order to promote Canarian Women's Squash
over the next few years, hoping to reach the great levels of popularity
with male players, achieved only in the last 5 years.
