Saffery shocks Willmott to take U17 title

Deon Saffery (Yorkshire) over
came the hot favourite Rachel Willmott (Sussex) to claim the Girls
Under 17 title in Bishop's Stortford. Rachel had been after her
7th national title but Deon proved too strong on the day
and won a competitive match 3-1.
The Boy’s Under 17 Championship was full of drama with the No1 seed Chris Tasker-Grindley (Gloucs) requiring a
one hour injury break during his semi-final with James Snell
(Devon). After it looked like Chris’s dream had ended he returned
with a heavily strapped ankle and not only won his semi but went on to
claim his first national title with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over
No2 seed Tom Pashley (Sussex).
The Under 13 events were won by
Nicholas Hopcroft (Surrey) and Millie
Tomlinson
(Derbyshire). Nicholas Hopcroft defeated his county collegue and
number one seed Charles Sharpes while Millie Tomlinson also defeated
the number one seed, Harriet Ingham (Surrey)
The event was sponsored by Kall Kwik Bishop’s Stortford and staged at
the Bishop’s Stortford Squash Club, an England Squash silver accredited
club.

The Kall Kwik Bishop’s Stortford British Under 17/13 Championships 2004
enjoyed another exciting day of squash as the Semi-Final line up was
decided.
Rachel Willmot (Sussex) eased
into the semis and is on course to defend her crown and claim her 7th
British title. Rachel is seeded to meet Deon Saffery (Yorks) in the final who
also reached the Semi-Finals comfortably.
The Boy’s Under 17 number one seed, Chris
Tasker-Grindley (Gloucs) came back after having to concede the
first game due to a recurring blood injury to beat Darran Healey
(Somerset) 3-1. Number 2 seed Tom
Pashley (Sussex) over came Jim Bristow (Devon) to keep his title
hopes alive and move into the semi's.
In both the Under 13 categories all the top seeds progressed through to
the Semi-Finals without too much trouble. The Surrey pair of Charles Sharpes and Harriet Ingham remain favourites
with both yet to drop a game.
