Yvon Provencal reports from
Montreal:
Last night, Club Sportif MAA in Montréal, renamed their glass court after
the great Canadian squash player, Jonathon Power.
Having moved from Toronto three years ago, Jonathon is
now based in Montréal and a packed house showed up to watch him play his
friend, Amr Shabana in an exciting exhibition match.
Renaming its main court had been in the plans for a few years and was done
in a grandiose night. The court now boasts a huge “Dive Guy” banner on the
front wall, a collage of pictures and a list of all his major titles.
“This is great, I really feel lucky and proud to be at the MAA”, said
Jonathon.
Perfectly bilingual, Jonathon is a perfect fit for
Montréal, a city of 2 million with a European flavour.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony, he went on and played Amr using the new
scoring system of games to 11.
Club pro Yvon Provençal, who set up the night adds: “Jonathon has raised
the interest for the game of squash for all levels.
"Juniors, Club players, league players and even other pros, the MAA is one
of the most active clubs that I know.” For the
record: Power won 3/1 in just under 40 minutes. |
