What was the best comeback in 2021?

Several of our panellists highlighted Mostafa Asal’s amazing fightback from two games and match point down against Tarek Momen in the US Open final to win 11-3 in the fifth. In doing so, he became the youngest ever winner of the title. Jonah Barrington, no less, says the world no.6 is “on a pathway to greatness”. Gregory Gaultier’s comeback, clawing back up over 600 places after a year out with injury, also draws a few approving nods. Eduardo Passos, meanwhile, picks out Pedro Mometto who won the Brazilian national title as a wildcard without dropping a game following two years out with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Mike Dale: “As you’d expect with Asal v Momen, the match was not the friendliest affair but it was certainly compulsive. Tarek looked broken at the end, but what guts and character Asal showed. You cannot take your eyes off the lad.
