Iskandar Takes CAS Title

Azlan Iskandar won the all-Malaysian final of the CAS International in Peshawar, overcoming compatriot Ong Beng Hee in five games.

Third seeded Iskandar took an early lead, but found himself 2-1 down to Asian champion Beng Hee. In a reversal of their Asian Championships semi-final, Iskandar recovered to take the last two games and clinch victory, his fourth PSA title, in just over an hour.

"Azlan played well and he was a worthy winner," Beng Hee told the Malaysian Star. "There is nothing to be embarrassed about losing to him.

"Azlan defeated Pakistani number one and top seed Mansoor Zaman in the semi-final. So it wasn't entirely a surprise to see him taking the title. In fact it's good to see another Malaysian climbing up the world rankings.

"It was also the first time that a tournament in Pakistan saw an all-Malaysian final and this is cause for celebration."

16-Oct, Semis:
All-Malaysian Final In Peshawar

Home hopes were dashed in Peshawar as Azlan Iskandar and Ong Beng Hee set up an all-Malaysian CAS International final.

Iskandar took just over half an hour to beat top seed Mansoor Zaman in straight games, while second seed Beng Hee needed four games to end the challenge of world junior runner-up Yasir Butt.

Top seed Mansoor, playing in his home town and watched by his father Qamar, turned in an error-strewn performance which Azlan took full advantage of.

"I'm delighted to beat a strong player like Mansoor Zaman in straight sets," said the Malaysian. "I’m working very hard to keep my winning spree intact but I think today was Mansoor's off-day."

14-Oct, round one:
Mansoor Leads Pakistan Assault On CAS International

Top seed Mansoor Zaman led a group of four Pakistanis through to the quarter-finals of the CAS International at the Army Squash Complex in his hometown of Peshawar after a straight games first round win over compatriot Majid Khan.

Twice a finalist, and champion in 2001, Zaman despatched Khan 11-3 11-5 11-10 in 26 minutes to set up a meeting in the next round with Egypt's fifth seed Hisham Mohd Ashour, who took 43 minutes to overcome local qualifier Arshad Iqbal Burki 11-7 9-11 11-6 6-11 11-7.

The quarter-final clash between fellow countrymen Safeer Ullah Khan and Yasir Butt will guarantee the appearance of a qualifier in the semi-finals. Khan resisted a fight back by sixth seed Ben Garner to upset the Englishman 11-9 11-6 6-11 3-11 11-8 in 44 minutes, while Butt took his place in the last eight after his fourth-seeded opponent Shahid Zaman retired midway through the third game with an injury - with the score standing at 11-5 11-9 7-3.
