BRADS HAS A BALL AND BEX SINKS STEPH
TO TAKE WIMBLEDON BSPA TITLES
Two fascinating finals thrilled a capacity crowd
watching the Youngs Wimbledon Cup finals. Claire Baker reports.
Men: Bradley Ball bt Peter Genever 15-9, 4-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-7 (87m)
This was a great game with marathon rallies, both lads putting everything
into it. As always, the guys questioned a few decision, quickly got it out
of their system then both went on to play fantastic squash. Genever was
retrieving brilliantly while Ball, as always, tried to play the
spectacular winners. Genever looked like he was taking control as he took
the second game by a wide margin and squeezed home in the third, but Ball
fought back.
The fourth and fifth games were similar to the first as Ball's shots went
in and Genever began to make a few unforced errors. The crowd were very
much behind Bradley, with a lot of vocal support from the juniors, as he
plays for Wimbledon in the Surrey Cup team. Therefore his victory was a
very popular one.
Women: Rebecca Macree bt Stephanie Brind 4-9, 9-5, 9-5, 9-1 (43m)
Both ladies played well in the first two games then Steph seemed to lose
her way in the third. She trailed 6-0 but then saw a few openings and
caught up to 6-5. However, Rebecca looking more determined, went through
9-5. In the last game Steph caouldn't get into any rhythm and Rebecca
stormed through 9-1. The match was played in a good spirit, and was
definitely the best game we've seen this week in the ladies' tournament.

You CANNOT be serious ...
TIM'S BACK ON TOP
Despite failing to retain his Wimbledon title, Tim Garner
has moved back to the top of the Grand Prix
standings with 855 points, and can retain the Grand Prix title
with a win in next week's Esporta Open. Or, in Tim's own words:
"Despite a black
eye [suffered in his match against Ritwik Bhattacharya], back to the top
of the tree. A win next week and it is ta da to my rivals!".
The ladies rankings see Stephanie Brind, Rebecca Macree,
Cassie Jackman and Linda Charman tied at the top on 400 points.

The Finals:
[1] Pam Nimmo beat [2] Cheryl Beaumont 9/7, 9/3, 9/0 32m
[2] Tim Garner bt [5/8] Stacey Ross 15/13, 5/15, 15/7, 15/5 65m
Claire Baker reports from the hotseat (Deputy manager
& referee)
One of the best ladies match we've had at this club. The first game could
have been anyone's, as Nimmo established an 8/3 lead but Beaumont clawed her
way back to 7-8. This first game was crucial, Pam managed to hang on to take
it. Cheryl is coming back from an ankle injury, and Nimmo was stronger &
sharper throughout the rest of the match, winning comfortably in the end.
The men's final was another great match, with two fantastic shot makers both
in the end matching each other for great nicks. Tim, forever the
running machine, retrieved an enormous amounts of shots with great accuracy
and still appeared to have plenty of running left in the tank at the end as
Stacey tired after his giant-killing exploits of the weekend.
Both matches were played in good spirits (& the ref & markers were brillant!)

Another record entry in the men's event means a) qualifying
required on Thu 21st, and b) £25 to be paid to last 32 losers.
Top seeds in the men's event, competing for the £500 first
prize, are Peter Genever, Tim Garner, Derek Ryan and Stephen Meads. The
women's £400 first prize attracts Pamela Nimmo, Cheryl Beaumont, Helen Easton
and Dominique Lloyd-Walter as the top seeds.
2001 Event
From Tynemouth in the north-east, the Prince
Grand Prix moved back down to London for the Youngs Wimbledon Cup.
With almost impeccable timing, as Prince announced they would be supporting
an end of season Grand Prix Finals event, Prince sponsored players, Mark
Cairns and Sue Wright picked up the titles and guaranteed themselves
qualification!
In the past one player has always produced the goods at Wimbledon Squash
& Badminton Club. Two years ago it was 5/8 seed John Dale who made the
final, last year 5/8 seed Ong Beng Hee picked up the title, this year it was
5/8 seed Bradley Ball, who had a super Saturday. In the morning Ball beat
second seed Stephen Meads in four bruising games and then backed up well to
put out third seed Tim Garner, also in four. Unfortunately, for Ball he was
unable to reproduce the magic on the Sunday and found top seed Cairns
tougher to remove, going down in straight games. Cairns eased his way to the
final without dropping a game, beating Julian Wellings in his semi. Wellings,
himself a 5/8 seed (spot the pattern?!), had beaten fourth seed Paul Lord
for the first time ever in the quarter finals to set up the clash with
Cairns.
Several of the country's emerging players cut their teeth (literally for
Daryl Selby, who cracked a tooth against former South African international
Craig Wapnick) against the more established pros. British Junior Champion
James Willstrop beat Closed runner-up Pete Barker before testing Tim Garner
over three games, and unseeded Chris Ryder upset 9/16 seed Ben Ford before
similarly coming up against Garner.
In the women's event, Sue Wright was rarely troubled on her way to a first
Prince Grand Prix title. The British Champion put out youngsters Becky
Botwright and Laura-Jane Lengthorn on the way to the final and showed
equally short shrift in disposing of Scotland's Wendy Maitland three-nil.
Maitland had looked in trouble in the quarterfinals and did well to get past
Carla Khan 9/7 in the fifth and then follow it up with a four game win over
Lauren Briggs in the semis. Briggs had registered the only win against
seedings in the women's event with a hard fought 3-1 win over top junior
Jenny Duncalf.
The Youngs Wimbledon Cup has long been established as one of the events on
the British Circuit and was rewarded this year with record entry of 39 in
the men's event. The Prince Grand Prix now moves on to the Esporta Club in
Croydon, where it is rumoured that Irish no.1 Derek Ryan will be making an
appearance in a bid to qualify for the Prince Grand Prix Finals
