Daryl’s delight at Grand Prix
Title
Daryl
Selby took the Reliable Networks BSPA Grand Prix Finals with a hard
fought victory over fellow England international Adrian Grant at the
Roehampton Club.
A repeat of the 2013 Final it was Daryl who started quickly racing
to 4-0 lead and this proved enough of a cushion to take the 1st
11/5. The 2nd game started closely as Adrian looked like
he was now getting himself into the match but a 5/2 lead was soon to
disappear as Daryl took control to go 8/5 with a mix of determined
rallying and wonderful shot making.
There was no answer to this from Adrian in the 2nd and
Daryl took the game 11/6 and a 2-0 lead. The 3rd was a
different story, Adrian looking focused and using his short kill
shots to good effect, reeling off 6 points in a row to go 9/2 up,
and some unforced errors from Daryl gave Adrian the game 11/4 and
hopes to retain his title. Into the 4th and both pushed
early to find an advantage, Adrian seeming more confident hitting
some wonderful winners to go 3/2 up, but Daryl stayed patient and
his retrieving combined with his excellent shot making gave him an
8/3 lead.
A spirited effort from Adrian to get back to 7/8 but Daryl took
control and closed out the game and match 11/7 taking the title.
They both now prepare
with
the England Squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow,
Scotland.
Daryl appropriately thanked
those involved in the event at the Roehampton Club, including
sponsors Reliable Networks, and looked forward to returning next
year to defend the title.
Daryl Selby beat Adrian Grant 3-1, 11/5, 11/5, 4/11, 11/7 (45min)

Daryl Selby bt Joe Lee 3-1 (7/11, 11/9, 11/4, 11/4)
A
high tempo start to the match with both players making each other
work for every point. The crowd highly entertained with world class
rallies, shot making and retrieving for all to see. A few too many
errors from Daryl in the first and excellent play from Joe saw Joe
take the first 11/7. The second game continued with both players
covering every inch of the court, and at 9/7 it looked like Joe was
going 2-0 up but Daryl had other ideas, some brilliant shot making
and a reduction in errors from Daryl saw the game level all 1-1 as
Daryl wins the 2nd 11-9.
The
effort both players had put in for the first 2 games was now
starting to show and it was Daryl who benefitted as he won the 3rd
11/4. The 4th saw Daryl start quickly taking a 6/2 lead and Joe
began to look tired increasing his error count. A few tough rallies
mixed in with some exhibition shots from both but Daryl wins 11/3
and the match.
Daryl
into his second BSPA GP final at Roehampton in a row with a tough
but deserved 3-1 win.
Adrian Grant bt Ben Ford 3-1 (7/11, 14/12, 11/9, 12/10)
Perhaps to be expected a seemingly slow start from Adrian countered
by superb anticipation by Ben made for an extremely close first
game. Ben, the underdog for the second match in a row, having got
past Tom Richards the round before possible felt one more big effort
and could a surprise be on the cards again!! Ben won the first 11/7.
The 2nd starts closely with Adrian again hitting the tin more than
he would have liked and Ben saved 3 game balls to get to 12/12, but
patience saw Adrian take the 2nd 14/12.
The third saw a big push
from both players knowing the importance of the game and Adrian was
made to work taking a 10/6 lead but Ben once more forced his way
back into the game only to see Adrian snatch the game 11/9. The 4th
saw either player not take more than a 2 point lead with both
hitting some unbelievable winners and again Adrian held on to take
the game and match 12/10.
Adrian through to his second BSPA GP final at Roehampton in a row
and setting up a rematch of last year’s final.
