Men's Final:
Rodney Durbach bt Renan Lavigne 15/10 15/7 15/9
Women's Final:
Linda Charman bt Jenny Tranfield 9/3 9/3 3/9 9/1
The sixth Annual Boston Open proved to be a great success for Boston
Squash Club who hosted the event last weekend – December 13th – 15th.
Play began on the Friday morning with the Men’s first round. The initial
disappointment of No. 1 seed, Simon Parke withdrawing at the last minute
due to reaching the Quarter Finals of the World Open in Antwerp soon
disappeared with the arrival of Rodney Durbach from South Africa as the
replacement No.1 seed, Rodney being ranked in the World Top 20. The
first round produced only one surprise with Andy Learoyd from Yorkshire
defeating David Barnett from Northumbria in five hard fought games.
Friday afternoon saw the start of the Ladies competition. Comfortable
wins for No. 3 seed, Jenny Tranfield (the current holder), Linda
Charman, seeded No. 1 for the event, and recent World Open finalist and
Lincolnshire’s Tania Bailey currently ranked 6 in the World.
The men’s last 16 provided some exciting squash for a good crowd on the
Friday evening although there were no major surprises as the top seeds
all advanced to the quarter finals.
The Ladies and Men’s quarter finals began on Saturday morning with the
highlight being a highly exciting five set match between the No. 2 seed
and World No. 21, Renan Lavigne from France and up an coming young star,
Andy Whipp. Lavigne coming out winner 15/8 in the fifth game. The Ladies
quarter finals did provide one surprise as Lincolnshire’s Tania Bailey
had to retire when one game down against Jenny Duncalf due to illness.
In the afternoon, the Club also staged a successful mini Junior
Tournament for all the County Juniors, and whilst there were no winners
from Boston, there were good performances from them all - Michael
Mitchell, Lee Harrison and Jamie Goodacre in the Under 13’s, Adam
Hildred in the Under 11’s and Scott Mitchell and Aidan Harrison in the
Under 15’s.
The Ladies Semi Finals turned out to be rather one sided with
comfortable victories for Charman and Tranfield to set up what promised
to be a hard fought final. Rodney Durbach then produced a highly
controlled performance in defeating Paul Hargrave, but again Lavigne was
involved in the match of the round showing incredible levels of energy
in defeating Ben Howell in yet another five setter to set up the eagerly
anticipated final between the top two seeds.
Both Finals proved to be hard fought affairs in front of a good crowd.
In the Ladies event, Charman justified her top seeding, her strong all
round game just proving too much for Tranfield, Charman winning 9/3 9/3
3/9 9/1. The Men’s Final followed, whilst Lavigne put in a strong
performance despite the previous days exertions, he was eventually
overpowered by the relentless tight squash of Durbach who ran out winner
15/10 15/7 15/9.

BOSTON BOASTS STRONGEST EVER FIELDS
Tim Garner previews the Boston Open ...
** UPDATE: Nick Taylor replaces Simon Parke in Men's draw, and
several changes in revised Women's draw
The last event in
2003 on the Prince Grand Prix, the Boston Open, is shaping up to be an
absolute cracker. Responding to the increase in prize money the Men's &
Women's events boast their strongest ever fields.
Making her debut on the Prince Grand Prix, World no.4 Linda Charman
spearheads a field that contains no less than six full internationals. Her
main challenger will be Tania Bailey, though the draw has thrown up
a potentially explosive collision in the semis between Charman &
Rebecca Macree. In their most recent encounter at Lexden in the
National League, Charman was eventually disqualified by the referee, while
Macree has only just finished serving a 3 month international ban! In the
bottom half, Bailey will face a stiff challenge in a projected semi-final
clash with the in-form Jenny Tranfield. However, all the top seeds
will be wise to treat their early opponents with respect as the Boston
Club has been the scene of many an upset over the years.
The Men's event also boasts a world class field. With Simon Parke
and Renan Lavigne, World numbers 26 & 20, as top seeds, the locals
are ensured of some quality squash. They will be severely tested by the
return to Boston of 1999 Champion Marcus Berrett, Prince Grand Prix
stalwart Paul Lord and Derby's Paul Hargrave. The latter
makes a welcome return to the Prince Grand Prix after an extended break
from tournament play and there is no doubt that he will be looking to
transfer some excellent national league form into tournament play.
Last year, it was
youngster Alister Walker who upset the odds and the seeds to get to the
semis, who will be this year's rising star ...?
|
Mark Cairns and
Jenny Tranfield picked up the trophies at this year's Boston Open.
Cairns went one better than last year, when he was the beaten finalist
behind Nick Taylor. This year, Tim Garner was on the losing side in the
final, so one imagines he will return next year! For Tranfield, victory was
sweet as she defeated Rebecca Macree to pick up her first title since last
year's Proctor Memorial.
The undoubted star of the weekend, was a young player called Alistair
Walker. In Aberdeen, Joey Barrington had been the giant-killer, this time he
was the giant that was killed! Eighteen year old, Walker played some of the
best squash of his short career to beat Barrington in five and then backed
it up the following day to put out third seed and former World no.9 Tony
Hands in four. The run was brought to an end by second seed Garner, who
clearly had watched Walker over the weekend and made sure that he was unable
to get a hat-trick of upsets under his belt. Garner, was actually fortunate
to be there himself, having recovered to win in five against the mercurial
Australian Mick Robberds in the quarters.
Stuart Cowie was another seed in trouble and but he managed to extricate him
from a two game deficit against Daryl Selby late on Friday night. The
effort was well worth it as when he turned up the following day, he
discovered that opponent James Willstrop had been struck down with flu and
so was into the Semis! There he was to face top seed Mark Cairns, who had to
battle hard himself in the quarters to get past Dutchman Laurens Anjema in
four. Cairns came through in straight games but was made to work hard
against the vociferous Cowie. The final was a much quieter affair and this
seemed to suit Cairns as he come home comfortably against Garner.
Often the women's events go to seeding but the Boston Open was to throw up
several upsets. First, Lauren Briggs put out Jenny Duncalf, despite losing
the first 0-9 in a very slow start, then Carla Khan fought her way past
Vicky Lankester in four evenly matched games. Briggs continued her good form
to take a game off Vicky Botwright in the Quarters, but the tournament was
then dominated by the top two seeds.
Rebecca Macree put out Khan in straight games, and Tranfield was always in
control against Botwright, despite dropping a game. The final was a hard
fought affair. First one player and then the other seemed to have the
ascendancy. By the fourth game Tranfield was in charge of the proceedings
and she managed to stay on top to rattle off 5 rallies and run out the
winner.

Taylor and Bailey triumph in Boston
The Prince Grand Prix moved on to Lincolnshire for the second event of this
year's circuit, the Boston Open. Organiser Mark Hildred described it as 'the
best ever' with entries of nearly 60 in the Mens and Womens events,
necessitating qualifying matches spilling over on to the Thursday evening.
Draws & Results
One of the reason the BSPA run the Prince Grand Prix is to provide a
springboard for some of the nation's younger players to progress up the
rankings by providing them with opportunities to take on more established
pros. Two players that took advantage of this were John Rooney and Mark
Heather. Rooney battled his way past England no.21 John Dale, winning 15/12 in
the fifth after squandering a 2-0 lead, a factor that may have played a part
in his straight games loss to Ben Garner later that day. Heather meanwhile
despatched Eric MCAlpine three nil before pushing 2000 Grand Prix winner Paul
Lord over four tough games.
Elsewhere
in the draw Julian Wellings survived a twisted ankle and a spirited comeback
from Andy Whipp before losing to 1999 Champion Marcus Berrett, who had beaten
Hadrian Stiff in the previous round. Top seed Nick Taylor progressed with
relative ease to the semi-finals beating Suffolk's Bradley Ball in the
quarters. Due to withdrawals, second seed Mark Cairns had avoided the seeds
until the quarters but was impressive once there in his disposal of Lord and
then Berrett without the loss of a game.
The final quarter was the battle of the Garners. Having played just 3
professional events together this year, brothers Tim and Ben met for the third
time. Older brother, Tim had already been pushed by one athletic Ben (Rickaby)
in the first round, but was once again two strong for his younger sibling. As
Ben comes to the end of his studies at Oxford University the gap will
undoubtedly narrow but Garner senior was still pleased with putting another
victory on the head to head tally before the tide turns!
After 55 minutes of pulsating squash, Taylor ended Garner's hopes and set up a
clash between the top two seeds. In the event, it once again went according to
rankings with Cairns able to snatch a game but no more and Taylor running out
a worthy winner.
Similarly
the Women's event paned out according to rankings, with top seed Tania Bailey
gaining revenge for a loss the previous week against fellow England
international Rebecca Macree. However, their paths to the final couldn't have
been any more different. Bailey eased through without dropping a game but
Macree was made to battle hard for her victories over Laura-Jane Lengthorne
(in four) and Dom Lloyd-Walter (in five). The only upset in the early rounds
was Jenny Duncalf's win over higher ranked Vicky Lankester. Duncalf was
leading 2-0 and 5-2 when Lankester retired with a sore ankle but the writing
was already on the wall and represented a big step forward for 18 year old
Duncalf.
