Brownell Downs Top Seed To Claim Victory

Timothy Brownell

American Timothy Brownell claimed the victory at the Richardson Wealth Van Lawn Open in Vancouver this weekend, his second title of the season so far.

The World No.62 came into the competition as the No.2 seed, but as the highest ranked player in the tournament. He started his week’s campaign with a solid straight games victory over Mexico’s Miled Zarazua, before then overcoming Alejandro Reyes in the quarter finals.

The American, who had already claimed the Sam Aguiar Louisville Open crown earlier in the campaign, then came up against Argentina’s Jeremias Azana in the last four. Once again, Brownell was able to get the job done in straight games, this time to move through to the final.

In the final, Brownell came up against former World No.36 Arturo Salazar, the tournament’s top seed. A tight first game went to a tie-break, and it was the American that took it, and with it, claiming the momentum in the contest. From there he dropped just ten more points, as he went on to secure the victory without dropping a game throughout the entire event.

Azana Gatecrashes Last Four

Argentina’s Jeremias Azana defeated No.3 seed Spencer Lovejoy on Thursday to break into the semi-finals of the Richardson Wealth Van Lawn Open in Vancouver, Canada.

The Argentinian had already gotten the better of No.7 seed Mark Broekman on the opening day of the competition, and came up against the USA’s Lovejoy in his quarter final contest at the Vancouver Law Tennis & Badminton Club on Thursday evening.

Astonishingly, all five games had an 11-8 scoreline, with the Argentinian winning in the end. He had to come from 2-1 down to do so, but he got the better of Lovejoy after a lengthy encounter, and will now go on to face another American, in No.2 seed Timothy Brownell, in the last four.

The other semi-final will feature top seed Arturo Salazar, after the Mexican got the better of the last Canadian hope, Liam Marrison. The Mexican won 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 to set up a clash with German Yannik Omlor, the No.4 seed, in the semi-finals.

The Richardson Wealth Van Lawn Open continues on Friday, October 28 with the semi-finals, where the last four will do battle in an attempt to reach Saturday’s final in Vancouver.

This Challenger 10 level tournament begins on Wednesday, October 26.

The Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club will play host to the tournament, with 16 players in action from six nations across the four day competition.

Mexico’s Arturo Salazar will be the top seed for the Challenger 10 level, with the American duo of Timothy Brownell and Spencer Lovejoy as the other members of the world’s top 100 in the draw.

Germany’s Yannik Omlor, Canada’s Connor Turk, Mexican Alejandro Reyes and the English duo of Mark Broekman and Perry Malik make up the rest of the top eight seeds for the tournament.

Turk will be joined by four other Canadians in the draw. Salah Eltorgman, Liam Marrison, Cory McCartney and Ryan Picken, with the latter being the wildcard for the event.
