City of Boston and its Beloved Symphony Hall
to repeat as hosts for U.S. Open Squash Championships September 13-16, 2003

BOSTON – July 3, 2003 – The world’s top ranked squash professionals will perform once again this September in the hallowed confines of Boston’s 101-year-old concert hall. In 2002, the U.S. Open became the first-ever sporting event hosted by Symphony Hall, home of the world famous Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, and proved to be a national media event.

The 2003 U.S. Open Squash Championship, presented by The Fineberg Companies, will be the sixth largest men’s event on the world squash circuit and offers in excess of $55,000 in prize money. Once again the all-glass squash court will be built inside the concert hall and seating configured to accommodate more than 1,500 spectators.

John Nimick, President of Event Engine, producers of the tournament, comments, “Last year we had one of the most spectacular debuts of any squash tournament in the history of the game.

Squash tour photographer Steve Line dubbed Symphony Hall “the best indoor squash venue ever” (SquashPics gallery from 2002) and 1,000+ person sessions established the event as one of the best ever attended in the USA.

We are expecting to attract even larger crowds in 2003 as Boston favourites such as #1 Peter Nicol and #3 John White and North America’s mercurial superstar Jonathon Power (#4) try to dethrone defending champion and world #2 David Palmer (latest world rankings)

As to the tournament’s status with Symphony Hall, Nimick continues, “We’ve been through a lot in two years, from an initial cancellation caused by 9/11 to a successful launch in 2002. Now it’s time to start a tradition. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is so pleased with Squash at Symphony that they created an annual slot in September for the Championships.”

2003 tournament sponsors include The Fineburg Companies, Fine Hotels, MARSH, FleetBoston Financial, Johnnie Walker, Boston Racquet Club, WBUR 90.9 and Dover Rug Company.

Ticket prices range from $20 to $80. A Squash Expo featuring the leading racquet and footwear companies in the sport accompanies the tournament.

Competition times and dates:
Sat, Sep 13, 7:00–11:00 pm, 1st Round (4 matches)
Sun, Sep 14, 1:00–6:00 pm, Quarterfinals
Mon, Sep 15, 7:30–10:00 pm, Semifinals
Tue, Sep 16, 7:30–10:00 pm, Exhibition & Finals

A special session (four first round matches) will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday September 13 at the new SquashBusters Clubhouse on the campus of Northeastern University to benefit SquashBusters, a first-of-its-kind youth enrichment program founded in Boston that teaches the fundamentals, discipline and values of the game of squash to serve as a life tool and motivator to urban youths between the ages of 12 and 14.
