31-Aug: Symphony Hall to Serve Up Second Helping of Squash U.S. Open Squash Championships set for September 13-16, 2003 WHAT: By far Boston's most unique sporting event, the 2003 U.S. Open Championships will return to the city's venerable Symphony Hall this September 13 16, 2003. The top 28 squash players from around the globe will compete for the 2003 U.S. Open Championship title. This is Symphony Hall's only sporting event and is a high calibre complement to the institution's world-famous Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops. Perennial favourites Peter Nicol of England (currently ranked number 1 in the world) and Jonathon Power of Canada (ranked 4th) will return, as will 2002's defending U.S. Open Champion and number 2 ranked David Palmer of Australia. Full draw Four matches per session will be played and spectators can enjoy all the action from custom-built arena seating surrounding the court, as well as access to additional seats available in the first and second balcony of Symphony Hall. Tickets start at just $20 each and are available by calling 877.524.5685. All matches are played on the floor of Symphony Hall in a state-of-the-art 32'x21' four-walled glass court. Player visibility and focus is ensured because each approximate 5'x7' glass panel is designed with a one-way viewing system. This is accomplished by baking a series of black, white
and coloured ceramic dots into the glass, then when combined with bright
interior court lighting and a darkened exterior, viewing is ideal for
spectators, but does not distract competitors. All 42 panels are made of 12
mm thick SEKURIT safety glass, requiring 14 tons of sand to complete. The
total weight of the court is 22,000 lbs. This 'top 10' Professional Squash
Association-sanctioned event is the national championship for world-ranking
men's competition in the U.S. |
