REPORT:

A total of 16 teams travelled to a warm and sunny Exeter for the inaugural West of England Racketball Team Festival. Representing clubs from Cornwall, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Somerset as well as a strong local contingent, the 48 players brought a mixture of youth, experience and plenty of enthusiasm.

Featuring teams of 3 players, the tournament was played as a graded event with the teams split into 4 divisions ensuring close and exciting matches from the very start. A Saturday evening barbeque and live music helped the players relax away from the competition.

In Division 1 the competition was as about as close as you’d expect with anyone of three local teams able to win the group going into the final game. It was Beer Money Inc (Paul Smith, Matt Pym & Matt Pike) who finally edged it, just pipping the Fabulous Baker Boys (Matt Baker, Steve Selley & Tim Baker) by one point.

Division 2 was also a close affair with “It’s The Taking Part” (Mark Grant, Ty Festa & Karen Bealey) topping the table.

Experienced racketballers T.A.R.T.S (Barry Haysom, Graham Morton & Wayne Burns) from Totton in Hampshire, won the third division.

Another visiting team Con Air (Roger Green, Nick Banfield & Siobhan Garland) from Falmouth held off a youthful challenge from Kirton Youth (& Mum) and the Sydenham Sirens to win Division 4.

During the presentations Devon & Exeter proprietor Adam Lings congratulated all of the winning teams and thanked all of the players for taking part in a successful first event and promised an even larger competition next year.
