Squash
gets further boost at Surrey Sports Park
The University of Surrey’s
recently appointed Squash Coach, Graeme Williams, has today been revealed as
Great Britain Team Coach for the World University Squash Championships in
Melbourne, Australia next July. Williams, who takes up his post in the New
Year, will continue his role both at Surrey and as Regional England Squash and
Racketball Development Coach for London and South East.
The appointment is a further
boost for The University of Surrey and comes just six months before the official
opening of its multi-million pound sports facility. Surrey Sports Park, which
has already identified Squash as one of its showcase sports, will boast six new
state-of-the-art glass backed squash courts, with two show courts for 160
spectators.
Graeme, a level 3 qualified
coach, represented the North of England at junior level whilst at senior level
he played the BSPA tour events. More recently Graeme secured the National
Doubles Racketball title in 2005, 2006 and 2008. As Regional England Squash and
Racketball Development Coach, Graeme helps develops the elite junior players in
London and the South East, whilst also overseeing the University’s entire squash
programme.
In his role as Team Coach for
the World University Championships, Graeme will be responsible for selecting,
training and developing the GB Team as they prepare to reclaim the title they
lost to Egypt in 2008.
Commenting on his new role, Graeme Williams said
“It’s a great honour to have been selected to coach the GB Team and a challenge
I will relish over the coming months. I strongly believe that nurturing student
talent is crucial for the future of the game. For these students to have the
chance to compete on the world stage will be great experience and excellent
preparation for those that go on to become professional players.”
Jason Harborow, Chief
Executive, Surrey Sports Park added, “We are delighted for Graeme and it’s
fantastic for the University to have someone of his calibre on board. Combined
with our elite facilities here at Surrey Sports Park, we hope that it will help
attract the best young squash players to the University.”
The University of Surrey runs
one of the 12 national Premier Squash League (PSL) teams, in addition to two
male teams and one female student team that compete in the British University
and College Sports (BUCS) League. The Surrey Sports Park will also be home to
Surrey Storm Netball Team.
