WHITE
CLAIMS MAIDEN SUPER SERIES TITLE IN FLANDERS
Scotland's John White claimed the second Super Series title of the year -
and the first of his career - after fighting back from 2-1 down to beat
higher-seeded Australian Paul Price 15-10 13-15 13-15 15-13 15-7 in the final of
the $60,000 Esso Flanders Squash Open in Antwerp. The Belgian title was expected
to be won by a Scot - but in the biggest win of his career White trounced world
champion and world No1 Peter Nicol, the top seed from Inverurie near Aberdeen,
in the semi-finals - in what, incredibly, was White's first clash with a seed in
the event.
The 27-year-old Australian-born world No12, who transferred his allegiance form
Australia to Scotland in September 1998, is enjoying a tremendous return to form
since undergoing a significant new training regime following his move from his
former Netherlands base in The Hague to Nottingham in England. White's 76-minute
win was a bitter blow for ninth seed Paul Price, the 24-year-old world No11 from
Melbourne who was also runner-up in last October's British Open after reaching
the final as 14th seed.
