Latasha Khan finally wins US Nationals Women's Crown

Groton School, Groton MA, Sunday March 19, 2000.

A packed house of several hundred spectators watched Latasha Khan of Seattle, the USA's top ranked pro, finally rid herself of the bridesmaid's label. Khan, the finalist on multiple occasions, didn't waste her opportunity, jumping on Princeton University's Julia Beaver at the outset and holding on to win a very close fourth and final game, 10-8.

Marty Clark, a medical school student from New York, dominated recently-naturalized pro Damian Walker on the men's side, winning the national crown in an easy three straight games. 

Titles were also contested in seventeen age group and multiple skill-level competitions.

Semi-finals summary
Latasha Khan, the #1 US women squash player and #18 in the world, charged past Louisa Hall, the #1 ranked women’s junior player, in straight games. Julia Beaver, a Junior at Princeton University, who won the National Collegiate crown two weeks ago, upset Shabana Khan, the #2 US women player. 

On the Men’s side, Damian Walker came from behind to edge David Ramsden-Wood in five close sets. Marty Clark, the enigmatic medical school student from New York, easily ran past Preston Quick, member of the National Championship Trinity College (Hartford) Squash team.

The 89th Annual National Squash Championships are being played this weekend in Groton and Concord MA with play in 28 different divisions, including age groups up to 85+. Admission is free to all finals on Sunday.

Quarterfinals summary
Louisa Hall, a high school student from Philadelphia, shocked World WISPA Pro Tour player Ivy Pochoda from New York in the quarterfinals of the US National Squash Championships, women’s flight, this afternoon in Groton MA. Princeton College junior, Julia Beaver, riding on her National Intercollegiate crown won just two weeks ago, equalled the feat, defeating experienced Dartmouth Coach and pro Shirin Kaufman.

Hall, the number one ranked women’s USA junior player now meets #1 seed and world no.18 Latasha Khan from Seattle, while Beaver meets Latasha Khan’s sister, #2 seed and world no. 23 Shabana Khan, also from Seattle.

On the Men’s side, defending National Champion, Amherst College senior Dave McNeely, beat Boston star Mark Lewis Thursday but in today’s quarterfinal failed to advance, falling to Marty Clark from New York.
