CHALONER HOMES IN ON
INAUGURAL SEAFRESH CHALLENGE

As expected, an appreciative & enthusiastic crowd turned up to watch Broxbourne’s first professional squash Tournament at the Mill Lane Club, which saw ‘local hero’ and World No.7, Mark Chaloner beat John White in a scintillating final. Many were hoping for Mark Chaloner to overthrow the World No.6, but no one expected the absolutely devastating array of shots & rally’s that repeatedly kept the audience cheering & clapping. Time and time again, Mark retrieved the ball from almost impossible situations & danced around the court giving a virtuoso performance. Winners and ‘nicks’ came regularly, like a magician pulling rabbits from a hat. His win had topped a remarkable day of quality squash.

John White, who had earlier been stretched by Broxbourne junior, Alister Walker, in the first semi-final, was certainly trying to win the £800 first prize, but found the dazzling display of the Broxbourne captain, to hot to handle.

Earlier in the day, Nick Taylor squandered 6 match points against a thankful Paul Johnson, who in turn became another Chaloner victim in the second semi-final, whilst good performances were seen from Broxbourne's other players on show, Rodney Durbach & Alex Stait.

A jubilant Chaloner received the inaugural SEAFresh trophy from the sponsor, Peter Vogt and commented on the quality of the players that had accepted the invitation to play.

However, mark my words; Mark Chaloner is definitely back!

Mark Chaloner, who captains Broxbourne's National League squad, said: "We are delighted to have such a star-studded field for our first major professional tournament at the club.

" We are sure that spectators will enjoy watching players of this calibre compete in a new event that will certainly break with tradition.

"There will be no seeding, which means that every player puts his reputation firmly on the line from the first round, which will be drawn on the day.

"Once each round is completed, a new draw is made for the next round, just like in the FA Cup. We think it will add to the entertainment value and the players are all looking forward to it."

Players will be competing for a top prize of £800, with £350 to the runner-up, £200 to second round losers, and £100 to first round losers.

The well-equipped Hertfordshire sports club has five squash courts, plus tennis, cricket and hockey, and is just a few minutes' drive from the A10 north of the M25.
