NICOL AND FITZ-GERALD TOP SEEDS IN QATAR
Peter Nicol and Sarah Fitz-Gerald swap the cool spring air of Manchester for the sunnier climes of Qatar next week for the PSA Masters and WISPA Grand Prix finals.Nicol slumped to a straight-games defeat to David Palmer in last year's PSA Masters quarter-finals in Hurghada. Palmer went on to beat Simon Parke in the semi-finals before losing in straight games to Jonathon Power in the final. Nicol hasn't lost to Palmer since then, and produced a battling display to beat him in the Qatar Classic final in October despite suffering from a dead-leg that left him unable to walk for a week afterwards.
Nicol has since reclaimed the No.1 slot that briefly returned to Power's hands before the tall, muscular Australian took over at the top for a spell. This year the Masters are being staged in Qatar and Nicol, fresh from his triumph in the British Open, is keen to enjoy another success in the Middle East sunshine. The event has a $100,000 prize money purse.
Interestingly, the seedings are based on the January rankings, which means that Palmer is seeded two, with John White promoted to three and Power placed at four. That means Power and Nicol are on course to meet in the semi-finals. Such is the standard of the men's game that there are tough battles all the way through from the first round onwards. If Nicol gets past South African No.1 Rodney Durbach in the first round, he faces the winner of Chris Walker (England) and Joe Kneipp (Australia), which is a tough one to call. Also in his quarter are Ong Beng Hee (7) and Del Harris (16) who face talented young Egyptians Mohammad Abbas and Karim Darwish.
Power's quarter contains David Evans (8), Paul Price (9) and Paul Johnson (15), but first the Canadian maestro must overcome talented Frenchman Renan Lavigne, who pushed Nicol all the way in the first round of the British Open at Lambs last week.
There are plenty of tough battles in the bottom half of the draw, with No.2 seed Palmer facing fellow Australian Anthony Ricketts. White meets Belgian Stefan Casteleyn in the first round, with Lee Beachill (12) or Graham Ryding in the second round. Alex Gough, fresh from his exciting run at the Open, meets Finland's Olli Tuominen in the first round with the winner lined up against Stewart Boswell (6) or Simon Parke. There are plenty of scores to settle from the Open. Omar Elborolossy will hope to do better against France's Thierry Lincou, while Martin Heath (14) who faces Nick Taylor, will also be hoping to gain revenge over the man from Marseilles after losing to him in the quarter-finals in Manchester.
The $60,000 women's Grand Prix Finals feature the top eight players competing in two groups of four, with the top two in each pool contesting the semi-finals. Fitz-Gerald is top seed in Pool A, followed by Linda Charman-Smith (4), Stephanie Brind (5) and Suzanne Horner (8). Carol Owens leads Group B, and will be keen to put some recent disappointing performances behind her. Cassie Campion (3) looks favourite to join her in the semi-finals, although this looks like being a much tighter group with Fiona Geaves (6) and Rachael Grinham (7) sure to fight hard.
It should be a great tournament. It's a shame, when so much investment has gone in to building Qatar into one of the top venues on the world tour, that the media are not invited. I'd love to be there.
