Swiss Open 2003

07-09 March, Geneva, Switzerland

HORNER & LEIFELS CLAIM
SWISS OPEN TITLES
While it was top seed Suzanne Horner who claimed the Women's Swiss Open title, the men's event was won by a qualifier as Germany's Stefan Leifels scored a surprise victory.

Horner, from Yorkshire, ended compatriot Laura Lengthorn's brave run in the event by defeating the 19-year-old third seed and twice British Junior champion from Lancashire 9-2 9-6 9-0. It was Horner's first WISPA World Tour title success since celebrating her 40th birthday last month, and the 24th of her career after claiming her first, the North of England Open, in 1988.

Leifels also made his mark in the squash record books by becoming the first German to win a PSA Tour title for six years. Leifels made his breakthrough in Geneva when he beat top seeded Australian Raj Nanda in the semi-finals.

In the final he defeated unseeded Spaniard Constantino Casas 15-10 15-11 15-9 to claim his second Swiss Open title after first winning the trophy in 1995.

Britons Willstrop & Maitland Celebrate Title Debuts In Geneva
Britons James Willstrop and Wendy Maitland celebrated their first professional squash titles in powerful styles in Geneva. After surviving a close-fought semi-final against fellow Englishman Joey Barrington, 18-year-old British national junior champion Willstrop overcame Dutch qualifier Laurens-Jan Anjema 15-8 15-10 15-6 in the men's final to claim his debut PSA Tour title in his first senior final.

In the women's final, third-seeded Scot Wendy Maitland triumphed 9-2 9-2 9-2 over England's unseeded Rebecca Botwright.  It was only the 25-year-old from Aberdeen's second appearance in a WISPA final, and a win that ended Botwright's excellent Swiss run which included the removal of Egypt's top seed Maha Zein.
