James Baker & Assoc. Open 2003
22-27 July, Oklahoma City, USA,  $6k

28-Jul
Anjema takes James Baker title

Dutchman Laurens Anjema beat top seed Stefan Casteleyn in the semi-finals in Oklahoma City, and went on to defeat England's Joey Barrington 3/1 in the final.

Eyewitness report from Oklahoma:

Anjema beat Castelyn 3-0 in the semis. The games were close - literally and figuratively! The ref was constantly challenged as the players jostled each other with increasing force.

Contact was constant in the Barrington-Anjema final as well which Anjema won 3-1. The struggle seemed to frustrate and rattle Joey who believed he was being blocked. He lost the first two games but pulled himself together to win the third. He lost the fourth game on a clear "stroke" call. The exhausting four games took 1 hour and 35 minutes.

In comments afterwards, Anjema graciously thanked event hosts/organizers as did Barrington, who also added, "Well-played Laurent, but I'll get you next time!"

We'd normally expect to receive information direct from the tournament, but in this case the first news came in the form of a text message from the new champion himself as he arrived back in London, to one of our Scottish readers!
