Nottingham prepares for
Euro Team Championships
The staging of the sport's prestigious annual team event at the Nottingham
Squash Club from 01-04 May marks the 30th anniversary of the championships, which were
first held in Edinburgh in 1973.
Despite holding an all-time unbeaten record in the women's event and winning
the men's title on all but three occasions, England has only hosted the
European Championships once before - in Sheffield in 1977, the year the
women's tournament was launched.
Nottingham Squash Club is one of England's High Performance centres and
recently underwent a £1.4 million refurbishment, supported by a £870,000
Lottery Sports Fund grant. In the weeks leading up to the European
Championships, the club will host a 'Festival of Squash' featuring some 80
local children representing the eight districts in Nottinghamshire and the
City of Nottingham.
Nick Rider, Chief Executive of England Squash, the sport's English governing
body, stated: "We look forward to hosting these major team championships in
Nottingham and to maximising the promotional opportunities for our sport as
we defend both our men's and women's titles.
England Squash have appointed Howard Harding as Press Officer
for the event.
"Howard Harding has provided invaluable PR expertise for us on many
occasions in the past and I am delighted that he will be working with us
again on the European Championships."
Sports specialist PR consultant Howard Harding has been linked with squash
for two decades. Based in Reigate in Surrey, Harding was the Venue Press
Manager for Squash at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games and is
currently retained by Dunlop Sports and jointly by the World Squash
Federation (WSF), the Professional Squash Association (PSA) and the Women's
International Squash Players' Association (WISPA) as 'World Squash Media
Director'.
"I am very excited at the prospect of working with Nick Rider and his
colleagues at England Squash, as well as Phil Songhurst and his team at
Nottingham Squash Club, and look forward to fully exploiting the PR
opportunities for this high-profile event being staged in England for the
first time in 25 years," said Harding. |
