SHABANA RETIRES

SHABANA RETIRES

It is reported by Egyptian Squash that four-time World Champion Amr Shabana has retired.

Shabana, regarded as the most sublime attacking player of his generation, was the winner of four world titles - he won in Lahore in 2003, Hong Kong in 2005, Bermuda in 2007 and Kuwait in 2009.

Although 36-years-old his reported announcement has come as something of a surprise. He is due to play in the Netsuite Open in September, with his participation announced and the draw completed. He has also entered the US Open in October. At this stage it is unclear whether these will be his last hurrah! Or whether he will be available for Egypt in the World Team Championships in December.

Now based in Toronto, Canada, at the Club Toronto Cricket club the left-handed Shabana turned pro in 1995. He hit the world no.1 spot ten years ago on 1 April 2006. He won his last major event, the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions event in New York where he beat Gregory Gaujtler in the final, in January 2014 at the age of 34.
