18-Mar-04:
FINAL NIGHT IS A SELL-OUT
Alan Thatcher reports
The Canary Wharf Squash Classic has achieved a notable milestone in its
inaugural year by posting "Sold Out" signs for the finals night.
With a week to go before next Friday's final at the East Wintergarden in
Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf, booking agency Ticketmaster reported to event
organisers that they had completely sold out for the finals night.
"That leaves just a handful of tickets left with the Abbey Box Office at
Canary Wharf," said event co-promoter Tim Garner, a director of Eventis
Sports Marketing, who are jointly staging the event with Alan Thatcher.
"It is a great achievement in our first year and shows that Canary Wharf
is a perfect venue for holding a world-class squash tournament.
"Ticket sales are also going extremely well for the other three nights of
the tournament, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but we advise
spectators to book early to avoid disappointment."
One of Garner's co-directors at Eventis, former world champion Peter
Nicol, will be making an early appearance at Canary Wharf to assist in the
event set-up after being knocked out of the
Bermuda Open by
Australia's David Palmer.
Palmer, of course, faces a busy opening day at Canary Wharf on Tuesday.
After facing Scotland's world No.1 John White in the opening match,
starting at 6pm, he is being driven up to Birmingham to play for Edgbaston
Priory in their National League play-off tie against Hertfordshire side
Broxbourne. Full details in Update #3
Palmer will be returning to Canary Wharf the next day to face England's
Lee Beachill in his second match in the Canada Place qualifying group.
The Canary Wharf Squash Classic, which runs from March 23-26, is an
invitation event featuring eight of the world's leading players.
John White (Scotland), Lee Beachill (England), David Palmer (Australia)
and James Willstrop (England) compete in the Canada Place group, while
Thierry Lincou (France), Peter Nicol (England), Nick Matthew (England)
and Ong Beng Hee (Malaysia) are in the Jubilee Place section. The winners
of each group go straight into Friday's final, with the runners-up
contesting a third-fourth place play-off.
