CWC UPDATE #1 28-Feb
Matthew replaces Ricketts
Anthony Ricketts' return to action will not be in time for
the Aussie to compete at Canary Wharf, so he is replaced in the lineup by
Sheffield's world number 12 Nick Matthew ...
Full details
White
will be top seed
The turmoil at the top of the men's game continues, and Thierry Lincou's
departure from New York's Tournament of Champions at the quarter-final
stage means that John White will replace the Frenchman at the top
of the world rankings, and will be top seed for the Canary Wharf Classic.
Nicol fit for the Classic
Peter Nicol reassured London squash fans that he will be fit for
the Canary Wharf Classic after being taken ill during the
National
Championships in Manchester.
"I feel fine now," he said, as he jetted off
to the USA for the Tournament of Champions. "I am suffering from some sort
of virus but I am looking forward to playing in New York. Then it's off to
Bermuda to get some sunshine before heading back to London to compete in
the Canary Wharf Classic."
He'll be bringing the Tournament of Champions
trophy back with him, so he must be feeling ok. He'll need to be fit
though, since after the Classic the man who has dominated the top of
the world squash rankings for six years will be setting off on another
high-altitude challenge ...

Nicol to take on
inflated challengers
Canary Wharf workers will soon get the chance to go on court with Peter Nicol.
An inflatable court, loaned by England Squash, is to be erected in
the Jubilee Place shopping mall on Wednesday March 10th to promote the
forthcoming Classic.
The new court attracted enormous attention when it was launched live on a
recent BBC Blue Peter programme (see the video), with Nicol giving some coaching tips to
the show's presenters.
"The court is great fun to play on and it is a great way to
attract new people to the game. Hopefully it will also attract plenty of
interest in the Canary Wharf Classic," said Nicol.

Matthew Replaces
Ricketts
Rising England star Nick Matthew has been drafted in to the Canary
Wharf Squash Classic as a replacement for injured Australian Anthony
Ricketts.
The Canary Wharf Squash Classic takes place from March 23-26 at the
spectacular new East Wintergarden venue at Canary Wharf, Europe's biggest
commercial development in the heart of London's Docklands.
World No.9 Ricketts is currently back in Brisbane having treatment on a
knee injury which is likely to keep him out of action until April, but
organisers of the Canary Wharf Classic are delighted to have brought in a
player of Matthew's quality and potential.
Event co-promoter Alan Thatcher said: "We are sorry to hear about
Anthony's long-term injury problems and wish him a speedy recovery and
return to action.
"However, we are pleased to announce a replacement of Nick Matthew's
undoubted quality. He has performed brilliantly in the past year or so to
achieve a current world ranking of 12.
"Nick is a very gifted player with superb technique, excellent
concentration and anticipation, and tremendous depths of determination.
"We are sure that London squash fans will be keen to take a closer look at
a player who has claimed many notable scalps in recent months."
Matthew, aged 23, enjoyed quarter-final appearances in the
Prince English Open
in his home city of Sheffield, and also in the
Qatar Classic, beating
two former world champions, Jonathon Power and David Palmer, in the
process.
He also battled through to the last eight in the
World Open in
Pakistan, and was a member of the England squad who claimed third place in
the World Team
Championships.
The Canary Wharf Squash Classic is a new eight-man invitation tournament
and the top seed will be Scotland's new world number one John White.
Also competing are Peter Nicol (England), Thierry Lincou (France), Lee
Beachill (England), David Palmer (Australia), Nick Matthew (England),
James Willstrop (England) and Ong Beng Hee (Malaysia).
