NEW SCORING SYSTEM
Matches will be best of five games, with each game point-a-rally to nine. If
the scores reach 8-8 a tiebreak comes into play, with the first player to go
two points clear the winner.
The marker will call "deuce" or "advantage" as in tennis. However long the
tiebreak, the score will be recorded as 10-8 (tiebreak) to the victor.
The FINAL will be
best of SEVEN games.

Squash Classic features a re-run of one of the most dramatic matches in
squash history, the 2002 World Open final between Australia’s David
Palmer and Scotland’s John White.
The two players have been drawn in the Canada Place Group in the
round robin stage of the event, along with England’s Lee Beachill and
James Willstrop, and already this section has been dubbed “the group
of death”.
British champion White, who enters the event as top seed after topping the
PSA world rankings for the first time in the March list, lost to Palmer in a
sensational World Open final in Antwerp in 2002 after holding match ball.
Beachill is currently at a career-best No.4 in the rankings after some
excellent recent results, including victory in the world’s richest squash
tournament, the Qatar Classic.
Rising star Willstrop, meanwhile, knows he is in for a tough time with both
Palmer and White gunning for revenge after recent shock victories by the
young Yorkshireman in Kuwait propelled the world junior champion to No.13 in
the world.
The Jubilee Place Group is headed by Thierry Lincou, who
became the first Frenchman to top the world rankings in January before
losing his place to White.
Lincou’s main rival in that half of the draw is England’s Peter Nicol.
The Canary Wharf co-promoter topped the rankings for the best part of five
and a half years before illness and injury affected his results at the
tail-end of 2003.
However, he has recently returned to top form with outstanding victories in
the Kuwait Open and Tournament of Champions in New York.
Also in the Jubilee Place Group are Nick Matthew of England, who has
risen to a career-best 10 in the world rankings, and Malaysia’s Ong Beng
Hee, a long-time training partner of Nicol’s in London before his recent
switch to Reading. |
