Final Round

Gina Kennedy bt Ellie Epke 11/6, 13/11, 11/7 Very clinical by Gina although had Ellie got her drops or trickle boasts up in the second we could have had a longer match.

Richie Fallows bt Joel Makin 5/11, 11/8, 11/4, 12/10 Great game with both players playing some lovely squash and playing the ball the majority of the time. The quality of Richies winners just edged the match but both deserve credit for physical effort and great entertainment.

Semi Final Round
Richie Fallows bt Adam Auckland 6/11, 11/6, 11/5, 12/10

1st – Adam got off to a fast start (4-1) and entertaining the crowd with quick movement and wonderful shots to increase lead to 8-4. Adam continued to use his hold and deception well to take game 11/6.
2nd – Faster pace by Richie who seemed more settled – 11/6
3rd Adam was trying to force things too soon and error count was increasing. He managed to remain patience  and at 4/4 it looked like the break for anew ball would help……sadly for Adam not as Richie focused taking the ball early and winning 11/5.
4th – close to 5/5 then Richie gave Adam 2 cheap points and some encouragement (7/5) but a harsh no-let at 8/8 looked to swing things! Adam was undeterred and had games ball at 10/9 but Richie play tight attacking squash to save the point and win the next 2 – 12/10.

Joel Makin bt Lyell Fuller 11/9, 3/11, 11/5, 11/5

Round 1 of the JW Cannon British Under 23 Open saw 50+ young hopefuls do battle across 9 hours of play. At the end of it all the Men’s seeds remained relatively intact with top seeds Richie Fallows and Joel Makin cruising through to the Quarters. The only seed to fall was Makin’s compatriot Emyr Evans. The 5/8 being edged out by current British Under 19 Champion James Peach 11/9 in the fifth.

There was, however, a big upset in the Women’s draw as 2nd seed Nada El Kalaawy was sent crashing out in round one by New Zealand based Eleanor Epke. Her straight games win over Epke has opened up the bottom half of the draw, but she will face stiff resistance from Australian Junior no.4 Victoria Leow in today’s quarter final. In the top half Georgina Kennedy wasted no time in taking up her Quarter-Final berth with a straight games win over Ali Hemingway.

Preview

Sponsored by JW Cannon the British Under 23 Open makes its first appearance on the calendar since 1990 this weekend. Back in the 80s luminaries such as Jahangir Khan, Rodney Martin and Susan Devoy lifted the prestigious trophy but this weekend at The Roehampton Club it will be a new generation that look to be crowned champion.

Roehampton Racquets Manager Paul Lindsay said: "Roehampton Club is delighted to be hosting the JW Cannon British U23 Open, which is part of the new ESF & PSA Under 23 circuit and whose final will take place on Sunday on our brand new glass back show court.”

World no.77 Richie Fallows tops the seedings in the Men’s event and is predicted to face former World no.105 Adam Auckland in the semi-finals. Meanwhile in the bottom half of the draw World no. 98 Welshman Joel Makin will be expected to face-off with local lad and World no.138 Lyell Fuller in the semi-finals. If the two top seeds take up their final berths then a cracker is in store with Fallows having edged Makin 15/13 in the fifth in their last encounter!

The Women’s event will see England Junior team mates Georgina Kennedy & Nada El Kalaawy seeded to meet in Sundays final. World no.98 Kennedy finished 3rd in this weeks British Junior Open, and will be looking to go a couple of places better at Roehampton. El Kalaawy is currently studying art, but has been in fine form this year having recovered from a foot injury that sidelined her for much of last year, and lifted the BSPA Solent Classic in November.
