Ladies Final: Emma Beddoes beat Aisling Blake 11/5 6/11 11/3 12/10

The winner of the Ladies Wimbledon Cup 2009 went to the number 2 seed Emma Beddoes, who played an excellent match against Aisling Blake.  Beddoes got off to a flying start in the first putting 7 straight points on the board without reply from Blake who looked nervous at the start of the match.  Blake put a good run of points together towards the end of the 1st but it was Beddoes who always looked in control.

The second was a much tighter affair with Blake taking a few more chances & playing much more positively.  The game was tied at 5 all when Blake started to put Beddoes under much more pressure extending the rallies & stretching her opponent into all 4 corners.  Blake took the second 11/6.

The third followed the same pattern as the 1st with Beddoes taking another early lead to 7-1, putting together some well constructed rallies.  Blake battled well but was struggling to contain Beddoes’ excellent control.  Beddoes regained the advantage of the match winning the third 11/3.

The fourth game was very tight until 6 all, when Beddoes looked to be heading to victory giving herself 3 match match balls with a 10-7 lead.  Only for Blake to dig deeper & work hard to take the game into a tie break.  But it was Beddoes who held her nerve to take the 2009 Ladies Wimbledon Cup!

Men’s FinalDaryl Selby beat Stacey Ross   11/7 11/2 11/4

The Men’s final was deservedly won by Daryl Selby.  The damage was done in the first game where Selby worked Ross tirelessly around the court with some wonderful control not giving Ross anything to play with.  It was a fantastic display of keeping the ball tight at all times & hitting sensational width to keep Ross on the back foot.

Although Ross worked hard to get himself 7 points on the board in the first game, there was very little way of getting back in the match with Selby in this type of mood.  Selby kept a grip of the match with his relentless ball control into all corners of the court winning the final 2 games with ease 11/2 11/4.

Selby now has his name on the Wimbledon Cup to follow in the footsteps of his good friend Peter Barker!

The 2nd Men’s Semi Final:

The 2nd semi final saw Daryl Selby the number 1 seed take on Alan Clyne the 5/8 seed from Scotland.

The first game saw Clyne take an early advantage to lead 6-3, where he progressed to earn himself game point at 10-6.  Clyne’s speed around the court & impressive counter attacking play was causing Selby problems.  Selby looked like he was gaining control towards the end of the game but it was Clyne’s attacking play that deservedly won him the first game 11/9.

Selby took his good form from the end of the first game into the 2nd & 3rd games, getting tighter as the match went on.  Clyne was now struggling to enforce his speed on the game with Selby offering him very little to take early.  Selby took the next 2 games 11/9 11/6 & looked likely to seal the match 3-1.

Only for Clyne to come out for 4th turbo charged & produce some wonderful attacking squash giving Selby very little time to settle on the ball.  Clyne took a quick lead to 8-1 in the 4th & finally won the game 11/6.

The match was now finely in the balance.  Selby used his greater experience in the 5th game to keep Clyne at bay early on & build himself an early lead to 5-1 despite Clyne still trying to give Selby little time on the ball.  I good string of points from Clyne brought him back to 5-6 but Selby eventually pulled away to take the game 11/6 & the match 3-2.

A highly entertaining game for the crowd in the last match of the day!

1st Men’s semi – final:

Stacey Ross beat Scott Handley:           11/8 11/5 11/5

The first semi final at the Wimbledon Cup saw former Champion Scott Handley take on local Surrey favourite Stacey Ross.  Both players are now vastly experienced & played the game in a fantastic spirit.

The first game was very tight right the way through to 8 all, with both players hitting tight & gaining control over the rallies with great width waiting for their opportunity to gain an advantage.  It was Ross though who game up with the goods when it mattered, clinically finishing off Handley’s loose shots. 11/8 to Ross.

Both the 2nd & 3rd games followed similar patterns where the games were nip & tuck to 4 all, only for Ross to pull away on the scoreboard putting together some World class rallies.  It was not that Handley did anything wrong except the occasional loose ball & maybe only a few errors throughout the whole match.  As Handley said as the match drew to a close “you’re getting destroyed!”  Ross took the final games 11/5 in both.

Ross’ shot selection was impeccable tonight & on this form will have a great chance in the final tomorrow.
