Friday 29th, day
ONE:
The 2004
British Open got under way at The Park in Nottingham with
Men's and Women's first qualifying rounds.
Numerous
drop-outs and byes meant there were only three matches played
in the women's event, but a full complement of men's matches
saw 10 Englishmen progress to Saturday's qualifying finals.
In the longest matches of the day Stacey Ross outlasted
fellow Englishman Andrew Whipp, and Switzerland's Lars
Harms came from 2-0 down to beat Australia's highly-rated
Cameron Pilley.
England is represented in seven of the eight men's qualifying
finals, all of which take place on Nottingham's glassback
court 10 on Saturday.
Today also saw the start of the Masters competitions,
with action in most of the men's categories, from Over 35 to
Over 65.
